It's common practice...after all, you really are in the market (sort
0f)...just don't insist on all day events...

I know it's futile to seek consensus as to a make of boat. But, I'm
seriously considering renting for a variety of designs before buying. Has
anyone else rented a sailboat. Pros and cons? Good locations around the
Chesapeake? The closest place to my old sailing grounds is in Jersey.

Wow, those are some fairly steep rates. A lot cheaper to look at boats,
then convince the owner for a test sail before consideration.

Thanks, that's a good idea John.
I wonder, though, how long it would be before my picture with a line
through it is hanging on every dealer's bulletin board.

yr right. which is why I was thinking that even if I spent a few grand over
the summer, I'd get a chance to live on a boat for a week at a shot and
really get a feel for it. Of course, I'm not so sure there are many high end
boats available. OTOH, I really can't afford a high end boat. So maybe it'll
work out just fine.

Heck Scout, just take a week vacation and come down to Georgia. I have
a Catalina 27 on Lake Lanier you can use for a week. Can't promise wind
tho.

My initial reaction was to chide you for using the word 'renting' , as
it is more commonly called 'chartering' if it's a sailboat. However, I
see on that web site that they say ''rent or charter a boat''.

What's the difference?

I thought chartering implied a crew was included?

Nah... bare boat charters don't care how many or how few people you have.
They only care about getting their money and the boat back.
