Yes, well, there seem to be a lot of dinoflagellates in the
waters at present...

In that case it needs to be a good one: make _sure_ it mentions
the _two_ flagella--I'd hate to shortchange any poster to this
newsgroup, especially those who've razed the level of wit and
invective lately--and the way the flagella appear to thrash out
of synch, one in a groove and the other spirally. The confusion
is only apparent, not real: it aids their microscopic filter
feeding. But the lasting impression is still of a lot of blind,
pointless thrashing about.

Understanding is probably not a function of the protozoan world,
though James Blish once suggested otherwise ("the seedling stars").

But I firmly believe every critter has its value or utility,
though in some cases I'm damned if I can work out what that value
or utility might be.

Come to think of it, as we're dealing with waterborne critters
here, perhaps their utility is a ford...

But of course! It's a proper, American Dictionary!
di·no·flag·el·late (dº"n½-fl²j".-l¹t, -l³t", -fl.-jµl"¹t) n. Any of numerous
minute, chiefly marine protozoans of the order Dinoflagellata,
characteristically **having two flagella** and a cellulose covering and
forming one of the chief constituents of plankton. They include
bioluminescent forms and forms that produce red tide. [From New Latin
Dinoflagellata, class name : Greek dinos, eddy (from dinein, to whirl) +
Latin flagellum, flagellum; see FLAGELLUM.]

I'm impressed. It even reads like the Queen's English, as well
as making sense and being accurate. Are you _quite_ sure this is
a US literary product?

It's the American Heritage Dictionary. I think it's made in Japan.
