Doug,
You ask a very good question. I carry a 150% on the furler and have no trouble making 45 degrees. When the wind picks up I will feather into it, to reduce heel and I get well inside 45' but I'm slower in both cases. Since I never race this way I can't tell you how much slower I am. Just knocking about, I really don't care. She is a good weather craft. I do give the Keel the credit for that. In light air ( 4 and lower) she gets very heavy in the head and she needs the main. I've never tried to "cut a Card" for the difference. If I'm sailing that way I'm not looking for speed and as long as I've got control (ability to tack) couldn't care less. That's good. A lot of boats won't get through irons under jib alone. It's very good to have practiced this kind of sailing. About the furry crew- don't worry. Relax, let the dog get comfortable on the boat... it might be a good idea to simply spend time aboard at the dock. Dogs are very perceptive and if you're worried, they will get upset. We got lucky with our current dog. He jumps on & off the boat, seems to consider it "just like home." Great companions. Fresh Breezes- Doug King |
