It depends on what gets written into the field. I can't remember exactly
what goes there, but it might be a series of message IDs, some of which can
be very long. The message ID depends on the server used by the person
originating the message - you can have a branch of a thread that is loads of
messages deep and still be able to reply to it if it so happens that the
posters in that branch all used a server which generated short IDs; but a
branch that is only a few posts deep could hit the limit if the posters'
servers generated long IDs.

IIRC, the proper way for a newsreader to handle the field is to strip out
the earlier references, thus ensuring that the length stays reasonable, but
OE just keeps adding new ones. (I might be wrong about that, it's been a
while since I read about it.)

Outlook Express could not post your message. Subject ' Katy get a
bigger dink', Account: 'News.Individual.NET', Server:
'News.Individual.NET', Protocol: NNTP, Server Response: '441 Line 4
too long', Port: 119, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 441, Error
Number: 0x800CCCA9

The following instructions aren't as complicated as they look.

Here is how you can reply to the message:

1. Highlight Katy's message.

2. Click "File" - "Save as" ... and choose Desktop as the directory.
(Desktop should appear in the drop down list)

3. Shrink all open windows so that you can see the desktop.

4. Right click the document called "Re_ Katy get a bigger dink.nws"

5. Choose "Open with" - "wordpad".

6. You will see a line near the top that starts with the word "References: "
This is probably the line that is causing the problem. This line
consists of a
bunch of references to previous posts. Each reference begins
with a "" and ends with a "". Delete the first couple of
references.

7. "File"-"Save".. and close wordpad.

8. Double click the document called "Re_ Katy get a bigger dink.nws"

9. Click the "Reply" button" and everything should work as normal.

yes, I'm still using ind.net, although I thought they were dropping
the free service last month. it's only doing it when I reply to your
posts. The few that went through I cut/pasted and replied to someone
else's post.

That used to happen all the time when I was still using individual

(formerly
berlin)...since I switched to ATT it hasn't happened...it would most

often
happen with Horvath's posts and with the posts from alt. insane,

aviator
crossposts...

As it indicates, line 4 in the headers is too long. I think it has
something
to do with the references to previous posts in the thread, which

is used
by
newsreaders to build the sequence of replies. There's a set limit

to how
long this line can be (might be 1000 bytes), but it's possible

that not
all
servers implement the limit. The problem, to some extent, may rest

with
Outlook Express - ISTR reading that it has a tendency to write

rather too
much information into that line (or doesn't manage it properly),

such that
some servers will reject the post.

I've had it happen occasionally when using the individual.net

server, but
replying to the same post via my ISP's text server worked okay.

yeah but you're a WHITE pianist.

Now it's doing it to Moorons posts.
If I hit ''properties'' , I now see ''line 4'' (references) is way
long.
But, I can't delete them.

There is no 'open with- WP' option. I'm using Win-95.
