Hey Jon....

Oz,

I don't know of any place that rents these, and a quick search didn't
produce anything viable. I've never heard of any of the major rental
companies renting one of these. They are pretty good in ice/snow, but I'd
recommend something a bit more roomy anyway, and most of the rental
companies do have SUVs. (I don't recommend using chains unless you have no
other choice. The rental companies don't want you to use them, I doubt they
supply them, and putting them on is not a lot of fun if the weather turns
nasty. There are crews that do it for you, but they charge $30.

Enterprise is pretty good generally. You'll pay a bit more for a Hertz or
Avis car. I'll see if I can find something about Subarus tomorrow.

One thing to keep in mind is which highway you decide to take and when
you're planning on doing the driving. Highway 50 closes periodically (80 is
almost always open), and chains, 4x4 or not, they won't let you through. You
should definitely check the weather and traffic. I'd also suggest not trying
to get there on a Friday or leaving on a Sunday unless you leave really
early.

Jon Ganz,
Do you know of any hire car joints in SF that rent Subaru Liberty,
Outback (or whatever you call it) or Forrester?

The trip to Tahoe will require an AWD or chains apparently and I've
been impressed with just how good the Subby system is in ice/snow.

I heard that this was more like a rental fee; crew on one side puts the chains on, up and over you go and on the other
side another crew takes them off?

I know... hardly anyone complains about the $30 though. You main need chains
even on the highway. It just depends on the weather.

89 closes regularly. I wouldn't rely on it. Sometimes, it's wide open... you
place your bets, you takes your chances. :-)

Yep, I'd heard about the changeover.
We're booked Saturday to Saturday so that shouldn't be more of a
problem than usual.
Hopefully 50 will be clear so we don't need to go right up to the top
of the lake and cone back down to Stateline.
Would 89 from Inikee on 80 down to Tahoe City be open or would I need
to go to Reno then down?

If you do decide to do LA first and you have some time, check out the Body
Worlds exhibit if you possibly can. I saw it a few weeks ago... flew down
there just for it.... ok for kids too....

Of course Monterey is always worth a stop.

I'll do some checking this morning and see what I can find.

We're now considering flying into SF instead of LA and staying at
Marina on Monterey Bay for a few days to look around.

Thanks for the help Jon.
Much easier if you have someone who is familiar with the area.

Hey Oz... I found one company that has either the Outback or the Forester.
Hertz. They couldn't give me the exact rates because I don't know the exact
dates. The approximate rate from the SF Airport is $390 with unlimited
miles.

So far all the others either claim that they "might have it" but couldn't
tell me or "can't guarantee a particular make or model."

make the rental happen, drop me a line.

I called Enterprise. They don't rent Subarus (said they wished that they

Normally, they go for $90/day or $70/day for a week, but the woman I talked

You'd need to give the rental agencies--the local offices--a call, Jon.
When we last rented from Enterprise, we were surprised to arrive at the
office and discover Audis, Mercedes, and other upscale cars for rent. None
of them appear in their ads on the Web. Each office apparently has a number
of non-standard cars.

No Man... nature dropped 3 feet of snow on us that day. Great stuff! I had
to go to Maplewood to pick up my smoked bacon in Sweetland then drive to my
buddy's farm in Maplewood. There were no plows off exit 11 and only one plow
on the 103.... and my S15 4x4 GMC was nicely loaded with about 400lbs of
concrete cylinders for added traction. Nobody was out driving.... except a
couple of snowmobiles and a quad. I was doing 140kph down the
straightaways... I did slow down for the turns... 4 wheel drifts around some
of those bends was awesome!

Think about it Marty... I've lived in the north for over 20 years.... do
you really think I haven't driven that fast in much worse conditions? But
what the heck... you're from Ontario.... you idiots slow to 60kph on a
superhighway at the first sign of a flake of snow dropping! You guys called
out the Armed Forces to assist in a frickin' snowstorm... you pussies!

Mooron, it's got nothing to do with ability. The cops will not allow
anyone beyond a certain point unless you have either snow chains or
a 4x4. And, it's not a matter of ability to put them on. It's a
matter of desire to not get out of the vehicle. I know you Canuks
are poor, but even in your money that's only about $100.

$100 will buy a lot of beer Jon.... I'd put on my own chains.. that
way I know it's done right!

I guess that now that the US drug companies are pressuring Canadian
pharmacies to stop selling to US customers, you'll have to resort to
illegal drugs. I'm sure you can get plenty of wacki tabacci up there.

Yeah... let'em pressure all they want!
Resort to Illegal drugs.... Bwahahahahahahahahahaaaaa
Wacki Tabacci or as it's commonly referred to 'Pot" is readily available
everywhere up here. Cripes I don't even have to buy it anymore.... I get it
from friends for free there is so much available..... I actually cut down a
bit because it's not as much fun now that it's legal.

consider.... 2 weeks ago I was doing

140kph down the highway [posted speed was 80kph] with a foot and a half
of snow cover since the plows couldn't get out to clear the roads.

Do you need a special tool to pile it on that thick?

No Man... nature dropped 3 feet of snow on us that day. Great stuff! I had
to go to Maplewood to pick up my smoked bacon in Sweetland then drive to my
buddy's farm in Maplewood. There were no plows off exit 11 and only one plow
on the 103.... and my S15 4x4 GMC

Give it a rest, you're not even a Canadian, there's no way you're going to push an S15 through half a metre of snow at 140. The speedo might of read
140, but tire spin doesn't count. The only idiot who called out the army was the jerk from TO, (the center of the universe according to anyone from
the GTA), Mel Lastman. I almost miss him, he did have a way with words, a bad way, but always good for a laugh.

Save the BS for a more private forum, we Canadians do cope with some impressive conditions, but there is no need to embelish.

Cheers
Marty
