Also... I don't have your email address. If you need some coordination to
make the rental happen, drop me a line.

I called Enterprise. They don't rent Subarus (said they wished that they
did). They're willing to rent you a Ford Explorer for $350 for the week.
Normally, they go for $90/day or $70/day for a week, but the woman I talked
to said she would do it for $50/day for a week.

Oz,

I don't know of any place that rents these, and a quick search didn't
produce anything viable. I've never heard of any of the major rental
companies renting one of these. They are pretty good in ice/snow, but I'd
recommend something a bit more roomy anyway, and most of the rental
companies do have SUVs. (I don't recommend using chains unless you have no
other choice. The rental companies don't want you to use them, I doubt
they
supply them, and putting them on is not a lot of fun if the weather turns
nasty. There are crews that do it for you, but they charge $30.

$30...that's highway robbery...I pay $10 here
Apparently the loop road that we'll be staying on gets snowed and we
may need chains..I'll need to double check this as I've been dudded
before when some hopeless driver has told me chains were a must and
the roads stayed easy even after heavy falls.

I'll look at the hire companies and see what I can get whatever.

Enterprise is pretty good generally. You'll pay a bit more for a Hertz or
Avis car. I'll see if I can find something about Subarus tomorrow.

That'd be great.
I own a Liberty in NZ and it's never let me down on what is regarded
as a pretty treacherous road on Mt Hotham.

One thing to keep in mind is which highway you decide to take and when
you're planning on doing the driving. Highway 50 closes periodically (80
is
almost always open), and chains, 4x4 or not, they won't let you through.
You
should definitely check the weather and traffic. I'd also suggest not
trying
to get there on a Friday or leaving on a Sunday unless you leave really
early.

Yep, I'd heard about the changeover.
We're booked Saturday to Saturday so that shouldn't be more of a
problem than usual.
Hopefully 50 will be clear so we don't need to go right up to the top
of the lake and cone back down to Stateline.
Would 89 from Inikee on 80 down to Tahoe City be open or would I need
to go to Reno then down?

We're now considering flying into SF instead of LA and staying at
Marina on Monterey Bay for a few days to look around.

Thanks for the help Jon.
Much easier if you have someone who is familiar with the area.

Oz1...of the 3 twins.

I welcome you to crackerbox palace,We've been expecting you.
