"Capt. Rob" wrote in message Ellen's vessel was geared to manage this at all times. She violated no rule. If you take this rule literally, you can't even go below for an instant. In addition to this, her vessel was carefully tracked during the voyage and it's course made precise beyond Neal's wildest dreams. Which of course throws a shadow of doubt as to the justification of referring to her accomplishment as a "Solo" venture.... CM |

A remote controlled vessel could do the same with another 200 grand. Just put a monkey in the cockpit. The rules of the record needs to be changed. Something needs to be added like NO-outside assistance at all. Or they need to make a new catagory Joe |

CM,
You mean a shadow like the "No Fighting rule in Hockey?" She sailed by the Rules of the Contest. The Solo label? The Race is a lot different than the original. Then so is the first flight across the Atlantic Ocean. Things are different today. OT |

Things are no different at all. People still want
to have their cake and eat it, too. CN "I don't fall down. Then so is the first flight across the Atlantic Ocean. Things are different today. Well Thom... to me Solo means just that... alone. Having a support team and the highest tech gear aboard.... in constant communication with land based support... isn't really solo to me. I cannot in good faith detract from the accomplishment of Ellen's trip..... but it's a media testing platform for new gear..... [ tactical to practical.] . Sure things are different today..... and I'm not buying Neal's position on the legalities and poor seamanship he claims was involved. Neal would have Joshua Slocum imprisoned for failing to keep a proper watch if that was the case. Actually Neal's current position resembles closely the Liberal edict to interfere and impose their nonsensical values on others.... Ellen's support team knew by the minute her location and the location of every boat in her vicinity at all times. ......that's not Solo Thom. That's a "Remote Crew" CM |

Not every vessel carries a locator. Big shipping, perhaps, provided their equipment isn't faulty or turned off but certainly not small private yachts which could be run down and sunk by little dyke Ellen's flagrant disregard for the Colregs and Rule 5 in particular. They would be in contravention if no sail plan was filed.... ham radio routing would inform all vessels in the area of her route and location, satellite phones are on most commercial and private yachts, sailors with crew failing to maintain watch which includes radio broadcasts as per court rulings would also be in breach if a collision occurred. More than likely that every vessel passing close to her route would have been informed. CM |

By whom and by what method? You have some peculiar ideas about what kind of comms are monitored by vessels at sea ... and how to get information to them and receive information about their position.
