Ethanol is heavily subsidized in the US thanks to Cargill and Bob Dole. It
actually increases pollution by lowering the gas mileage and efficiency of a car engine. Looking at the total production cycle ethanol is a bust as far as cost and pollution. "Capt. We can grow corn til the cows come home (provided they don't take a shortcut through the cornfield). It's the most practical renewable resource today, and would benefit one of the most beleagured segments of society: farmers. Our local ethanol plant can produce a gallon of ethanol for less than 25 cents. Auto engines can be made to run on pure or slightly modified ethanol for less cost than to convert them to run on methane, and for a tiny fraction of the cost of hydrogen fuel cell technology. We sell ethanol at the pumps here in Canada..... it's not that cheap! CM |

I think we should go to Pedal Cars... think of the advantage in health and
the environment... never mind the drastic reduction of fatal highway accidents. CM "Gilligan" wrote in message nk.net... Ethanol is heavily subsidized in the US thanks to Cargill and Bob Dole. Of course both Fred & Barney could really make that car fly on bowling nights or for the Order of the Water Buffalo meetings. CM |

Not to mention that ethanol has never been tested as a sole fuel source, rather only as a small percentage of gasoline. Odd that race cars, such as Indy cars, used to run solely on ethanol with a tiny percentage of nitromethane added for increased performance. Ethanol increases octane ratings, allowing it to be used in higher-compression engines. If ethanol were such an prolific pollutant, why then do we have alcohol stoves on boats, but no gasoline stoves? Why do most authorities agree that ethanol is safer for this use than kerosene, not to mention far less smelly? Max |

Subsidies:
54 cents a gallon he http://www.ssu.missouri.edu/publicat...97/vandyne.htm 20 cents a gallon he http://news.minnesota.publicradio.or...khoom_ethanol/ 2 billion $ a year he http://www.cgfi.org/materials/articl...2/may_8_02.htm 54 cents a gallon he http://www.taemag.com/issues/article...cle_detail.asp Pure ethanol has 118 octane. What gas station sells pure ethanol to the regular public? What is the cost? The ethanol blend used here decreases gas mileage. "Maxprop" wrote in message ink.net...
