I don't think they were stupid, but I think they should have done things a bit differently. Hindsight is always 20/20. A predicted northerly blow in the Gulf Stream is always rough; and they were too dependent on their engine. I also disagree with the attitude expressed, "we have to get back to land." I wonder if the boat was being kept somewhere in the south, and they travelled to it; this would mean maintenance issues.
