On Wed, 19 Jan 2005 04:36:12 GMT, "Maxprop" scribbled thusly: I worked as a professional ski patrolman there in '73 through '75, but there was no development of Peak 7 at that time--only Peaks 8 and 9. My favorite run at Breckenridge was Inferno (in the valley off Peak 9 toward Peak 8), which I helped cut in the summer of '74. My fondest memories, however, were of XC skiing around the Continental Divide, which was the next range toward the east. The town has exploded since I left, and so has the ski area, including both Peaks 7 and 10 of the Ten Mile Range. Wonderful memories. Max Yep, I know Inferno by name, I'd need to look at a trail map to fix it. The place has really gone crazy, I was there as far back as late 70's then about every 4 years since then and it's changed a massive amount. Just last night I booked accomodation in Tahoe for next year so I might even consider a quick trip over to Breckenridge when I scoot over to visit some friends in Vail. I've gone back every other year, thanks to continuing privileges at the ski area and friends with large homes/accommodations. What is disturbing is how the town has changed since I lived there. When we moved to Breckenridge in '73, it still had dirt streets and wooden sidewalks. One year later everything was paved. The Gold Pan bar still had a dirt floor, but the CO Dept. of Health shut them down a year later, until they put in at least a wooden floor. Since that time the town has just exploded, thanks to overeager developers and land values. Today it's like an urban area, not the quaint gold mining town it used to be. I'm sure you've noted the changes, too. Some change is good, and change is inevitable, but I think Breck experienced runaway development in the Eighties and Nineties, which has completely eliminated any of it's original personality. It's almost another Vail. Max |
