Yup. Three years in Breckenridge convinced me of that.

Lucky *******, that's a sweet mountain!
Those runs off 7 & 8 are waaay too good!

I worked as a professional ski patrolman there in '73 through '75, but there
was no development of Peak 7 at that time--only Peaks 8 and 9. My favorite
run at Breckenridge was Inferno (in the valley off Peak 9 toward Peak 8),
which I helped cut in the summer of '74. My fondest memories, however, were
of XC skiing around the Continental Divide, which was the next range toward
the east. The town has exploded since I left, and so has the ski area,
including both Peaks 7 and 10 of the Ten Mile Range. Wonderful memories.

I voted for Bush.

So did I --- ONCE!

The DOW was over 11,700 a week before the witless nut we elected too office
and there was a budget Surplus. Within a week the market crashed to under
8,000, we began running the biggest deficites ever, and 9 months into his
watch terrorists were able to bring down the FTC. The idiot's response?
Catch Bin Ladin? NO! He knocked off Bin Ladins worst enemy and get 1000 of
our kids killed for what?

I'm an idiot but I'm wise enough not to vote for Bush twice. What does that
make those who did? What is stupider and more dogmatic than an idiot? Look
in a mirror and get back to us .... (c;

Yep, I know Inferno by name, I'd need to look at a trail map to fix
it.
The place has really gone crazy, I was there as far back as late 70's
then about every 4 years since then and it's changed a massive amount.
Just last night I booked accomodation in Tahoe for next year so I
might even consider a quick trip over to Breckenridge when I scoot
over to visit some friends in Vail.

I've gone back every other year, thanks to continuing privileges at the ski
area and friends with large homes/accommodations. What is disturbing is how
the town has changed since I lived there. When we moved to Breckenridge in
'73, it still had dirt streets and wooden sidewalks. One year later
everything was paved. The Gold Pan bar still had a dirt floor, but the CO
Dept. of Health shut them down a year later, until they put in at least a
wooden floor. Since that time the town has just exploded, thanks to
overeager developers and land values. Today it's like an urban area, not
the quaint gold mining town it used to be. I'm sure you've noted the
changes, too. Some change is good, and change is inevitable, but I think
Breck experienced runaway development in the Eighties and Nineties, which
has completely eliminated any of it's original personality. It's almost
another Vail.

If change is so bad, why do you keep going back? Go to Crested Butte if you
want small town. Go to Ski Cooper if you want a small area. Obviously,
quaintness and small town are not at the top of your list, you continue to
go there for some other reason. Ski Mt Quandary if you want a real ski
experience.

Amen!

We also had volunteer (amateur) National Ski Patrolmen who worked weekends.
And the DID work.

One of my jobs was avalanche control, including the use of explosives. So .

I go to ski, I go to see old friends, I go to be in the mountains. But I
don't have to like what's been done to the town. I have the right to bitch
about it. So do the locals, most of whom bitch about it constantly and
incessantly. Next you'll be asking them why they don't move away.

Go to Crested Butte if you
want small town.

We skied Crusted Butt once, and thought the mountain/trails were okay, if
not great. Small town or not, it's still far more urban than Breckenridge
was in the 70s.

Go to Ski Cooper if you want a small area.

Who said anything about wanting a "small area?" Breckenridge, even when it
was owned by the Aspen Ski Corp., was not a small ski area. To the
contrary, it was one of the ten largest in the state.

Obviously,
quaintness and small town are not at the top of your list, you continue to
go there for some other reason.

See above.

Ski Mt Quandary if you want a real ski
experience.

Life's too short to waste even a weekend there.

Amen!

Nah, dying in an avalanche isn't the way I planned my exit.

Something tells me you aren't stupid enough to ski out-of-area and get
yourself buried anyway.
