Jeff Morris December 20th 04 02:02 PM

You're jumping the gun a bit, Thom. The precise moment of the 2004
solstice will be December 21, 2004 at 7:42 A.M. EST (12:42 UT).

Tomorrow has the least daylight for those of us in the North, it has the
most for our inverted brethren down South.

However, it does not have the latest/earliest sunrise/sunset as one
might expect. Since the actual time of local noon varies up to 15
minutes through the year, the earliest sunset up North is about Dec. 8,
the latest sunrise is about Jan 5. If this doesn't make sense, search on
"equation of time" or check out:
http://www.astronomynotes.com/nakedeye/s9.htm

New England is having a little snow storm now, so it will be a White
Christmas around here. I, however, am headed for Florida in a few days!

Ya know, I would really love to meet Neal, even at the risk of providing
him with great fodder for future posts! However, we'll be up in Boca

about half way. I'm not sure we'll make it, but if Neal would like to
put us up for a few days, we could be tempted! My daughter would love
to go swimming off a boat again!

Thom Stewart December 20th 04 03:56 PM

Jeff,

I hear what you're saying. I've kind of adopted the ancient's way of
solstice period. That is when the Sun seems to stop its movement South
or North.

You are right about the exact time. but there is the period in the
winter and in the summer when it takes a lot longer for the Sun to
change a Degree. It justs seems to hang in the sky. This period is the
Solstice Time.

Since I've fallen into the habit of taking my Noon Sights with an out
stretch arm and a closed fist the Solstice has kind of become a season
inside a season.

So, bear with an Old man and be happy that the Sun is taking a little
rest before the return trip back to us.

Ole Thom

John W. Bienko December 20th 04 04:24 PM

Ole Tom describes a unique method of taking the noon sight of the
Sun.. holding out his arm and making a fist.
PLease tell us more details .. as to the precise methodology..

John,

It is rather simple, stick the thumb into the folded fingers to the
first knuckle and hold it at arms length. That will give you a 10 degree
spread. Each knuckle is two degrees. Top of the knuckle to the hollow
between 1 degree, half way up or down is a 1/2 degree. If your sighting
is between I say plus or minus. ( When voyaging, a 1/2 degree will get
you to 30 miles. A minus gets you inside 30, a plus over 30.

To Calib. your fist and arm, stand in the corner of a room and count how
many fist it takes to get 90 degrees. Ten should do it for most people
but it will let you know what your fist represents

Kind of a fun and easy way to check out things that are happening around
you.

So as of tomorrow the Sun will be 23 1/2 degrees below the Equator.
Subtract that from your local GMT Noon reading and you should have your
local Latitude.

Not sure where your located but St John is about 45 degrees (4&1/2
fists) minus
2 fists and 1 & 1/2 knuckles should be the local sighting (2 Fists and 1
knckle)
Give it a try and a laugh at Ole Thom

Thom Stewart December 20th 04 11:07 PM

john,

I told you WRONG. Distance between knuckles is 2 1/2 degrees

45 minus 23 1/2=21.5 That would be
2 fists and 1 3/4 knuckles observed on the Noon gmt sighting

On the 30 mile would be a 5/8 of a Knuckle. a little better than halfway
between the top of a knuckle and the hollow between Knuckles.

Each knuckle to knuckle is 21/2 degrees=150 miles
Knuckle to hollow between knuckles=11/4 degree or 75 miles
Half that distance (knuckle to hollow) 5/8degree=27 miles

You can set them up;
Fist is 10 degrees
Distance between Knuckles is 2 1/2 degrees; 1/2 a fist is 5 degrees

When talking miles it is really rough ballpark figures but will get you
within 30 miles

Get your Fist out there and then you figure the fractions of that
observed fist

Duh! Like I said, there is a water table. It does not vary more than a foot or
so in its level. No matter where you drill you will hit it. A dowser is unnecessary.

Almost all well diggers in these parts claim dowsing ability....and of
course you drill where there's a water table...that's the point of
dowsing..to find the best place to drill...

I hope you did not pay for the witchcraft of dowsing.

As an intelligent person, if you paid you got ripped off.

Wells are drilled into a water table. Where you place your well
is of little concern because the water in the water table will
be within a foot or two of being lever.

Oh Jeez,

What's next? A discussion of dowsing?

John,

It is rather simple, stick the thumb into the folded fingers to the
first knuckle and hold it at arms length. That will give you a 10
degree
spread. Each knuckle is two degrees. Top of the knuckle to the hollow
between 1 degree, half way up or down is a 1/2 degree. If your
sighting
is between I say plus or minus. ( When voyaging, a 1/2 degree will get
you to 30 miles. A minus gets you inside 30, a plus over 30.

To Calib. your fist and arm, stand in the corner of a room and count
how
many fist it takes to get 90 degrees. Ten should do it for most people
but it will let you know what your fist represents

Kind of a fun and easy way to check out things that are happening
around
you.

So as of tomorrow the Sun will be 23 1/2 degrees below the Equator.
Subtract that from your local GMT Noon reading and you should have
your
local Latitude.

Not sure where your located but St John is about 45 degrees (4&1/2
fists) minus
2 fists and 1 & 1/2 knuckles should be the local sighting (2 Fists and
1
knckle)
Give it a try and a laugh at Ole Thom

Gotta agree with you there Cappy; when we had our well drilled the drillers asked us where we would like our well and I pointed out a location about
10' out from the house. The guy gets out his dowsing tools (two pieces of coathanger wire) and proceeds to wander around eventully stopping right over
the spot I wanted, the wires suddenly cross and he tells me I'm really lucky, there is water right where I wanted it. My nightbors had the same guy
do their well, same story, funny thing though, the water in both wells was found at 65'! Uri Geller couldn't have done better.

Cheers
Marty, a great fan of the Amazing Randi

Have to agree CN,

The Dowsers usually find the spot where they want to drill.

I was first shown it with a man and two bent brass rods. Then I had a
welder in the maintenance shop bend two pieces of brazing rods and ask
me were I wanted to find water. He could make those tips come together
anytime and any place he wanted. He could make them come together right
where he was standing in the weld shop by just shuffling his feet
without changing his physical location. Then he held out his hand for
his Dowsing fee.
He taught me how to do it, for free.

P/S The believers still believed, saying there was water under the
maintenance shop

Don't be such a wuss, Doug....you only get that kind of weather a few times
a decade...it's normal here...

Mr. King cannot help being a wuss. It's just the way all those
over-the-hill trawler people are. If he were anything but a
wuss he'd still be sailing.

It's not much of a trick to make the brass, or hickory, or whatever,
appear to dip at the spot you want the well. The trick is to be able to
locate the spot where water will be found closest to the surface, and
where it will flow the easiest.

Probably out of everybody who claims to be a dowser, maybe one out of
fifty or a hundred will actually have some perception of where to drill
the best well. I've seen it done here in NC and a few spots in New England.

Doug King

Sorry, Mr. king but NOBODY has been able to demonstrate
scientifically that dowsing is anything but a crock of hock.

The amazing Randi has a longstanding million dollar prize to
be claimed by anybody who, under controlled scientific
conditions that they can do anything paranormal. Dowsing
is included. Nobody has claimed the prize for over a dozen
years now.

What does that tell you?
