I suppose that depends on your ideas about "scientific proof." Some
people are notoriously hard to convince, just look at the public
convictions about evolution & global warming.

In any event, I know of about a dozen properties which had poor wells,
where several different drillers failed to improve the situation, and a
dowser found a spot where water was much closer and flowed at a greater
rate.

The amazing Randi has a longstanding million dollar prize to
be claimed by anybody who, under controlled scientific
conditions that they can do anything paranormal. Dowsing
is included.

How are you going to have "controlled scientific circumstances" in well
drilling? Build an artificial continent?

... Nobody has claimed the prize for over a dozen
years now.

What does that tell you?

That the Amazing Randi probably doesn't really have a million dollars.

In any event, I would not go so far as to say it can be "scientifically
proven" that dowsing works. Only that some people have a sense for it,
and it's quite rare. Just the same way that some people can
(occasionally) tell what cards are in another person's hand...

Supposed to get up to 21° today.
Maybe it will be warmer in upstate NY?

At midnight the temp got down to a chilling 50 deg. Farenheit. But it's
supposed to turn cold tomorrow with the highs in the 50's.

On Wednesday morning we are supposed to get snow in most of the state. My
boys are ecstatic, but I'm thinking about Florida. :-)

We didn't have many this year...it never got warm enough for them to
incubate...of course, the threat of West Nile went way down...

Yep. That's one reason why I live here instead of there. OTOH we will
finally get rid of the mosquitoes in the back yard, which managed to hang
on through the last near-freeze.

No...a douse is necessary....it costs much more to rill through large rocks
than it does through pea gravel or sand....and there are several water
tables...you have to find the clean one...our well is 200 ft down because
the water table at 70 ft is brackish and undrinkable...

"Capt. Neal®" wrote in message

Duh! Like I said, there is a water table. It does not vary more than a
foot or
so in its level. No matter where you drill you will hit it. A dowser is
unnecessary.

Almost all well diggers in these parts claim dowsing ability....and of
course you drill where there's a water table...that's the point of
dowsing..to find the best place to drill...

"Capt. Neal®" wrote in message

I hope you did not pay for the witchcraft of dowsing.

As an intelligent person, if you paid you got ripped off.

Wells are drilled into a water table. Where you place your well
is of little concern because the water in the water table will
be within a foot or two of being lever.

John,

It is rather simple, stick the thumb into the folded fingers to the
first knuckle and hold it at arms length. That will give you a 10
degree
spread. Each knuckle is two degrees. Top of the knuckle to the
hollow
between 1 degree, half way up or down is a 1/2 degree. If your
sighting
is between I say plus or minus. ( When voyaging, a 1/2 degree will
get
you to 30 miles. A minus gets you inside 30, a plus over 30.

To Calib. your fist and arm, stand in the corner of a room and
count
how
many fist it takes to get 90 degrees. Ten should do it for most
people
but it will let you know what your fist represents

Kind of a fun and easy way to check out things that are happening
around
you.

So as of tomorrow the Sun will be 23 1/2 degrees below the Equator.
Subtract that from your local GMT Noon reading and you should have
your
local Latitude.

Not sure where your located but St John is about 45 degrees (4&1/2
fists) minus
2 fists and 1 & 1/2 knuckles should be the local sighting (2 Fists
and
1
knckle)
Give it a try and a laugh at Ole Thom

Have to agree CN,

The Dowsers usually find the spot where they want to drill.

I was first shown it with a man and two bent brass rods. Then I had a
welder in the maintenance shop bend two pieces of brazing rods and ask
me were I wanted to find water. He could make those tips come together
anytime and any place he wanted. He could make them come together right
where he was standing in the weld shop by just shuffling his feet
without changing his physical location. Then he held out his hand for
his Dowsing fee.
He taught me how to do it, for free.

Ole Thom
P/S The believers still believed, saying there was water under the
maintenance shop

It's not much of a trick to make the brass, or hickory, or whatever,
appear to dip at the spot you want the well. The trick is to be able to
locate the spot where water will be found closest to the surface, and
where it will flow the easiest.

Probably out of everybody who claims to be a dowser, maybe one out of
fifty or a hundred will actually have some perception of where to drill
the best well. I've seen it done here in NC and a few spots in New
England.

Doug King

Mr. King cannot help being a wuss. It's just the way all those
over-the-hill trawler people are. If he were anything but a
wuss he'd still be sailing.

Katy is slightly misinformed.

The wind has come around from the East and warm ocean breezes
have warmed up the peninsula. It's in the fifties even north of
here. Here in the Keys it's in the low seventies/high sixties as
I write this.
