Subject: Neal Warren, Master Mariner
Damn right you will not find the definition written down anywhere, it is a made up term used by no professionals. I suspect it flys around yacht clubs like the title Capt. But feel free to use anytime you want, it means nothing as anyone can be called a master mariner if they get the itch to do so. I think in the narrow community that has needs to understand the accomplishments and required skills of a true master would use the term Unlimited Master or Master of ******. Capt.MMA is full of **** when he say it's an INDUSTRY term, it is not. If it is PROVE it. Joe ROFL Joe, as I told Neal, that I don't care if he uses the term as applicable to himself, I don't really give a rats ass if you believe MMA or myself as to the definition of the term. It's been so *******ized in the movies, etc., that in truth, it really has no meaning to the general public, is just fluff for people like Neal, and really only has meaning of importance to those who hold unlimited licenses and those who directly deal with them. As to proving it to you, I have no interest in trying since I don't consider your acceptance, pro/con, of my definition important. Within the community/trade/industry I work in, the term is known and used in one of two specific ways, related to a specific individual. Believe me, don't believe me, like it or lump it, I could care less. Shen |

From: Didereaux The title "Master Mariner" is most 'officially used in the various Merchant MArines around the world. It is also a class of license which can be granted by the U.S. Coast Guard with tonnage limitations. Further Lloyds of London mainttains a Master Mariner list composed of Merchant ship Captains(ships Masters) The non-meaningful title of Master Mariner can, and is bestowed willy- nilly by various organizations, fraternaties, clubs and social groups and outside of their highly restricted realm has no meaning and carries no significance. In sum: If I were to found the Benevolent Order of Mudbuggers & Gunkholers we could bestow the title MAster Mudbugger or Master Mariner on any we wished. The caveat is that woe be to the silly jackass who claimed such a rank in a gathering of true ships masters. -- Didereaux LOL Too true. The only change I'd make to what you say is that the USCG issues limited Master licenses, but they do not designate the holder as a Master Mariner...... a point of terminology. Alas, you've probably raised the ire of Neal and Joe, so stand-by. BG Shen |

Lubber terminology.
The title of Master Mariner will never be used by the USCG. You will never see it on any legal documents. Here is every master licences and the skills required to sit for the licences. Note you will not find a Master Mariners Ticket. http://www.mmts.com/licens.htm#MASTER_LIMITED. No one has proven the term is proper anywhere except in the yacht club steamroom. Joe |
