What a difference a day or two makes.
Just a couple days ago there was more crap and garbage unrelated to sailing on this group than ever before. Now that Bobsprit has been humiliated off and BB has been kill filed off by many people and now that the Gay One has been thrown off and now that I have asserted myself and my good friend Bart Sr. has come back and Captain's Shen and otn have returned to dazzle us with their understanding of the COLREGs things are looking up. Even Jeff Morris is a plus. We still have Scotty for comic relief and Gilligan for brilliant insight and Bob Crantz for inspiration. And Katy and Lady Pilot for the female perspective. power/telephone line disruptions due to bad weather and downed trees, and thus no connectivity where I live.. perhaps in a day or so. I'm at a customer site, so no access other than google. In the U.S. we have civilized laws regarding the defense of others from human predators. In fact, in NC a couple years back a bill to update the law on use of deadly force to protect property failed to pass. As far as shooting people goes, in Michigan, if someone breaks in to your house you have the option of shooting him dead or not shooting him at all...if you shoot and wound they can sue you for everything you;ve got...also, they have to die in the house..if they crawl out and die on the sidewalk, you are then a murderer rather than shooting in self-defense... I know it's happened, which is ridiculous... but IMHO it's not so much a problem with the laws as with the fact that there are far too many lawyers with nothing better to do. As far as shooting people goes, in Michigan, if someone breaks in to your house you have the option of shooting him dead or not shooting him at all...if you shoot and wound they can sue you for everything you;ve got...also, they have to die in the house..if they crawl out and die on the sidewalk, you are then a murderer rather than shooting in self-defense... I've heard that in many states if you shoot somebody in your yard, drag them into the house and you're OK. As for being sued by a robber... I know it's happened, which is ridiculous... but IMHO it's not so much a problem with the laws as with the fact that there are far too many lawyers with nothing better to do. A friend of mine was once sued by a man who drove his car into the side of my friends house. I don't know how the lawyers tried to convince a court that my friend was driving his house recklessly....
