Says he was anchored and the rhode wrapped on the prop. No other
anchor? He's got the jib out?

To look at it it seems he must have been asleep or something? Weird. Like
haggy says, definitely should have had a second anchor. Or paid a delivery
skipper.
Great link!

If the dufas would have had his main up he probably could have sailed the
boat away from the beach.
Was he sailing down the coast under genny alone? Was this guy anchored off
an exposed beach? I wonder how it all started.

I think he was a boobspit type sailor, when the engine failed he
panicked and felt all was lost. As a last ditch effort he tried to
sail , with just jib , towards shore hoping to grab a mooring.

It looks like there's not much wind, but he certainly would have done
better with the main set too. Judging by everything else that happened,
the guy might not have known how to set the main.

It appears so... it says he anchored "off Kitty Hawk" and that's a long
way from any inlet.

... I wonder how it all started.

It probably all started with the romantic notion that sailing would be a
fun adventure. Then he got some advice how to handle the boat on an
internet discussion group...

And what's wrong with that? The deal I got made it the same as if I would have
stayed another 5 years. I got a years severance, 5 years added to my age and
length of service on paper which boosted my pension, guaranteed health
insurance and I took my 401K with me. The only thing I would have gained by
staying another 5 years would be 4 more years of salary. A fabulous deal. I
can go be a part time boat broker like you now only I'll have more income than
you even if I don't sell any boats.

Nope, I haven't done that sort of work in 11 years. My last gig in that arena
was at the Polk Club, which was really nasty. I figured it was a matter of time
before something really bad happened, so I dropped out.

As far as working goes, I may decide to do some consulting work now that I've

My father retired at 63, but he still works and makes money. He was wealthy
enough to retire at 48, but he has a work ethic and a sense of social
responsibility. We think that being retired is generally what kills people.
