Oz... it seems to me like the general trend is to blame the animal for the
attack ... when in reality it is usually the people with no comprehension of the world they inhabit that are to blame. I don't hold much respect for 4x4 campers and even less for people that can be so easily undone by a predator with the brain of a chook. It's time people learned that ability to access does in no way guarantee safety. They should have been fined for killing the Salty and fined again for gross stupidity. No bravery was displayed here.... Idiocy was displayed! That Croc could have been subdued in seconds by someone with an iota of comprehension of their habitat, trigger systems and physical abilities.... without a gun. There was no reason for the attack if the "victim" had even the base understanding of what makes a Crocodile act/react. We have idiots up here who lament bear attacks... bears don't attack without reason. Yet every year idiots fall prey to them. Good Riddance! I'm all for the bears! I'm also all for the Crocs...and the Sharks! I would have preferred to see the lot eaten by the Croc... I will nonetheless concede.... that the actions of the Lady was courageous... even though the initiation of the attack rests squarely on their own shoulders. What a totally ridiculous situation and an unnecessary lost of life.... for the Croc. Ban the human Idiots.... why did they have a gun to begin with?? don't you folks have laws against such things? Only Cowards and Idiots need guns to defend themselves.... especially in the Bush! CM OzOne wrote in message ... On Wed, 13 Oct 2004 10:20:42 +1300, Nav scribbled thusly: Great story. Mooron the man was asleep in his tent when the croc grabbed him and was
dragging him back to the water. The death roll is not carried out in these circumastances. You really should not underestimate the pulling power of a 300kg croc. I can just see it now, you with your legs in it jaws trying to hold onto sand to stop being pulled into the water all the while arguing with it that it's not playing by your rules. The very brave granny jumped on it's back to slow it's progress to the water while a gun was being fetched to stop it. Get real man! These salties are really dangerous. You ARE lunch -if they can sneak up on you and there's not a damn thing you can do if they've got hold of you -unless you happen to have a weapon to hand. Cheers Capt. How did that happen? this isn't a friggin jungle cat ..... it's a croc! I think it's you showing your ignorance of the Salty. They are a wonderful predator. Of course they are Oz... in their element. I doubt they were equipped through eons of evolution to deal with campers in a friggin tent!! Do you understand the term "Ambush Predator"???? These reptiles lack the ability to stalk their prey Oz!! That's a fact! Something these people did attracted this Croc to their location.... that is for certain! They should be fined for the damage they did! CM |

You are making assumptions... there was nothing in the article to substantiate this. Ummm the victim was asleep. Not according to the article Oz.... he was awakened by a bump on the tent. Not something I'd like to see, especially after the croc followed his usual method of stuffing his prey under an underwater log for a few weeks to tenderise it before comsumption. What does it matter after you are dead? The camper was asleep and followed all guidelines. What guidelines? It stated nothing as such in the article. You probably should come out to Australia. There are many places where guns are almost essential as a survival tool. We see no need for guns in the cities. You probably should come to the Northern reaches of Canada.... we have way more wild open spaces than you folks do. Many more Predators and if you list Pigs and Crocs as your Apex Predator... well Oz.. really.... you should come up this way! I'll show you predators. I often travel deep in the bush without a gun. Then again I don't always need a gun to take down my food. Oh, OK, maybe next time you're out here and a 200kg ferral pig decides to charge you without warninng, and without you even knowing he was there, you might change your mind. Those tusks will tear open a human like a letter opener does a letter. Oh Yeah... gotta watch out for those Feral Pigs..... jeeez... come on Oz.... those things are hard enough to see let alone encounter. How many people in your country have been killed by a feral pig Oz?? No Really.... How many? You think you are the only country with Feral Pigs ????? Samoa has Feral Pigs Oz.. I lived there and hunted them.... it's a friggin PIG! Get a Grip! They are PREY! They do actively prey on tubers and roots Oz!!! Only Cowards and Idiots need guns to defend themselves.... especially in the Bush! Easy to say that now that our ancestors have made "the Bush" so safe. OTOH an ancestor of mine did walk from San Diego to Illinois via the Great Salt Lake unarmed circa 1850, when that was still frontier. Can't say he enjoyed it much. |

They are pretty awesome. The surprising part is how fast they move on land. It lookesto me like they push forward with their tail, so the whole front of their body is airborne. Yes, they have tremendous ability to leap, lunge, and can hit the ground running to sprint for short distances. They exceed alligators in this ability by a lot and apparently also have better eyesight and a wider range of prey. I used to putter around a lot in north-eastern Florida in the creeks and swamps, got used to being around alligators. They don't bother you if you're in a small boat or even a canoe... OTOH it sounds to me like you do *not* hang around sal****er crocs. We went on an eco-tour some years back that included Komodo Island, seeing the huge monitor lizards. They are awesome. But they also only go after certain types of prey under certain conditions... we were always accompanied by at least two rangers. The dragons seemed to barely notice us... although when my wife crouched down to take a picture of one from a low angle, the dragon (about 15 feet away) definitely took notice and started toward her. They also reacted to goat imitations... the rangers did this, not me! They thought it was funny. Anyway, what I was going to say is that the sal****er croc range extends both sides of Komodo & Rincha, where the giant monitors live. I wonder how much their habitats overlap, we were told that the dragons cannot compete against other predators. Regards Doug King |

In his closeted safe enviroment (with no real predators) he has no idea what the worst of Oz is like. He probably wouldn't recognise half the predators. Crap... your "dingos" are 40lbs of scrawny mutt compared to our 125lb wolves Your Feral Pigs... heck you have a TV celebrity that wrestles them to the ground bare handed. Nav... they are PIGS!! I eat pigs. Oh Yeah the dangerous Wombat.... and the killer Roos!! Compare those to a 1500 lb Polar Bear, a Wolverine or even a Walrus! The Salty is your only claim to fame if you ignore your plentiful snakes. I don't carry a firearm when I survey.... I've surveyed in Resolute, Holman and Sachs Harbour to name 3 of over 20+ locations. Matter of fact... pick any spot north of the 60th and I've most likely been there. You have no idea of the predators up north... but I'd dare say that from my many conversations with a multitude of Aussies that work for BHP Bilton Diamond Mines in the NWT ... I have a very good idea of the wildlife in Australia. My favourite Aussie trick is the Australian Bagpipes! I'm certain you know that one. So Nav.... BITE ME! Hey, don't you start with that homo stuff. Cheers |

I loaded the replies with enough ammo to allow even Bush a success!! What do I get??? ..... 2 or 3 half hearted tugs on the line and a really ****ed off KittyFish! I made an effort to raise your blood pressure ...with obviously little effect! In the good old days you guys would have used those openings to raise your status at my expense! Now-a-days..... you all fold faster than superman on laundry day!! A Kittyfish??? a paltry Kittyfish??? If that's the only thing in this left in this pond with any venom... The croc is severely limited in it's ability to attack a land based mammal that can sprint to 18 kph over a hundred meters in seconds.... never mind comprehend it's surroundings beyond base instinct!! It's hunting food... man is not the natural prey. Peter Wiley wrote: Got some bad news for you, CM. Man *is* natural prey for sal****er crocs. Back in the 'old' days, the aboriginals apparently used to do river crossings at a sprint. The logic was that the croc, if about, would nail one of the older, slower members. That's taking recycling a bit too far IMHO. Shrug. Don't know if it's true, but the people did have to cross the rivers and the crocs did lie in wait for prey. A 12' sal****er croc is immune to any primitive weapon I can think of, offhand. IIRC the biggest salty recorded is about 18'. Supposed to get over 20' but no official measurement AFAIK. Thing is, their girth & weight starts going up disproportionately with length once they're over around 10', I think. I've never seen one but never want to. Florida alligators can't compare. I've read accounts of the Australian sal****er croc grabbing people out of boats... heard of one case of one grabbing a person out of a stalled jeep... not fun. They've grabbed outboards off boats. Big crocs are territorial. They're dangerous in their habitat. Whether this particular story is light on fact or not doesn't really matter. PDW |
