Scattered showers and T-Storms is not enough to make me pack it in most days. I keep sailing, but in a direction that will keep me out of the storm. When these storms kick up, there is invariably wind associated with them. If the storm is coming from W-SW, as it usually is, I can easily sail at 5 or 6 knots headed either south or north and the storm will blow on by without me getting wet. It's not at all hard to get out of the way. The LIS is about 23 miles across up here. I've been doing it this way for about 45 years now. BB agreed. out by the thimbles the distance you can see is increased substanially. your tactics are valid for where you are. for me that means being well east of execution rock, which places the sail past a "3 hour cruise" with some non-sailing friends. west of execution reduces running room north to south. hope you keep doing it for another 45. BTW the thimbles are really great. spent last weekend anchored off of calf island outside of Belle Haven.. also beautiful watched the 12 meter boats when you see these things you start to beleive there is a god. there was also a double masted vessel..my guess 140' LOA made my 30 footer look like a ragged dinghy......oh well. cheers gf. |

"gonefishiing" wrote in message ... yep you are right about the mention of t storms all summer in LIS and this forecast (like all) requires your own visual and tactile assesment Yes, except it is not Summer in LIS now. i have and still do sail out knowing the forcast as well. what is missing from this conversation is the use of ones senses I'd rather wait a day and sail in nice weather. Must be getting old. I used to ride motorcycle in the snow, but no more. sail around them? now how do you do that? 2 possiblities exist one you don't sail far past your mooring That's bob. two, you must own one hell of a fast boat. a Mac26X? yes i sail with forecasts of T Storms but it is only after my own assesment see i usually sail often with my daughter and friends aboard and feel responsible for them, if not for myself. In the summer, it's hard not to, as almost everyday there's a 'chance of t-storms'. I don't mind getting wet when it's warm, but it is cooling down now with this cold front. A nice thing about the Chesapeake, there are lots of well protected anchorages scattered throughout the bay where you can 'duck for cover'. Scotty |
These LIS thunder storms are
usually not very large as far as area covered. On days with scattered showers, we manage to sail around most of those, too. Exactly. They can be tiny and we've even sailed between two storms with ease. Everyone I know does it. RB |

I can't afford radar, but I do watch The Weather Channel thru my neighbor's trailer window and they're showing rain ( not scattered showers) and t-storms for today through tonight. so I'm avoiding them by staying the coffee table. |
