Anyone know the approx. length of the Caribbean chain in miles?

A quick look at a map show that Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands are at 18
degrees North, while Trinidad goes down to 10 degrees. Thus the North-South
range is 480 nautical miles. Sailing island to island would of course be
longer, and I suppose it depends on what you call "the chain." The
Windward/Leeward Islands would be about 500 miles.
