Lightning protection

How many folks have lightning "proofed" their boat?
Did you make your own modifications or buy a package? What systems are
better than others?
Have you ever been hit?

Not I, neither, no.

If there were any justice, lightning would strike you for firing
this topic up again. What's next...guns?

Lady Kate's bigger transatlantic-crossing sister "Loose Moose"
(not on the web now but here's another:
http://www.ace.net.au/schooner/as39ba.htm#start )
was lost due to lightning. No lightning condutors etc (wood
mast). Struck while at anchor and unattended in a storm in the
BVI. Blew the mast up, punched a hole through the hull _forward_
of the watertight bulkehead, and melted the anchor cable,
whereupon boat was wrecked on blowing ashore. Would it have been
lost similarly with lightning protection rovided? Probably, is
my guess. Let the flamewar begin.

It seems a bit beneath the Tim I know,
If you deem your recent luck, means your boat cannot be struck,

I beseech you do not boast, with arrogance don't toast,
Hubristically inferring volts won't find you,
For I've seen what's left of men, when God trickle charges them,
A smoking heap of flesh, the smell of stew.

By other posters I've been jolted, though you're first to wish me bolted,

Electricity never behaves erratically, only logically, following very strict
rules that can be defined mathematically.
Is it your opinion that protection is impossible? Or are you saying adequate
protection is impractical?

I have had so many experiences with lightning near misses over the years,
boat and otherwise, that I am positive that is how I am going to end it
all....
and if you read all the stuff out there, there is really no way you're going
to protect something that waves a giant metal or wood stick in the air
screaming "Hit me"...Yacht-L has had some really long winded discussions on
the subject that cover everything from "cones of disruption" to sticking a
lightning rod up there....go to their archives and have fun reading 10 years
of ongoing banter....

Scout August 21st 04 03:16 PM

It was 30 years ago, almost to the day. I was an 18 year old tough guy
working a summer job to make some book money for college. I was working the
7AM-3PM shift at a factory called Strick Trailer. An August storm, born of
high heat and humidity, was upon us. A co-worker had ridden his Harley
motorcycle to the factory that morning, but his wife, concerned for his
safety, had driven the 60 miles from their home at the Jersey Shore to pick
up him and his bike with their truck.
Ah, irony. At 3:05, as we ran to our cars to avoid the drenching, I saw him
loading his bike on the truck, when a flash was seen and a boom was heard,
so loud that all the War Vets instinctively dropped to the asphalt. It took
a second or two before I heard the screams of his wife. I ran over to the
truck to help, as did a few others.
I'm no doctor, but this man was dead dead dead. His eyes looked like big
fried eggs. He smelled like a cross between burning chemicals and roast
beef. His hair and his clothes were smoking. His bike was charred, as was
the back of his truck.
The ambulance showed up and took him away. I made my way across Rt 1 to a
go-go bar known for serving minors. I drank heavily and played pool, vaguely
aware that naked girls were smiling at me for dollars. I looked at their
bare breasts and saw only his big fried egg eyes. Somehow I got home, puked
in the driveway, slept out back in a lawn chair and woke up in time for work
the next morning.

after looking at the possibilites and methods of providing lightning

I have had so many experiences with lightning near misses over the

years,
boat and otherwise, that I am positive that is how I am going to end

it
all....
and if you read all the stuff out there, there is really no way

you're going
to protect something that waves a giant metal or wood stick in the

air
screaming "Hit me"...Yacht-L has had some really long winded

discussions on
the subject that cover everything from "cones of disruption" to

sticking a
lightning rod up there....go to their archives and have fun reading

10 years
of ongoing banter....

How many folks have lightning "proofed" their boat?
Did you make your own modifications or buy a package? What systems

are
better than others?
Have you ever been hit?

yeah , as posted abovemy boat was hit.
on the protection aspect, i'm with katysails.
after looking at the possibilites and methods of providing lightning
protection, it mostly seemed like snake oil
the only thing i did, besides repairing the damage, was to buy a

lenght of
chain that i keep in the sertn locker that can be clipped on to the

back
stay and dragged in the water.
other than that, a few prayers my come to mind.

I've been hit twice. Its a steel hull and nothing was damaged. My
next slip neighbor got hit last summer and it melted every wire and
electronic instrument he had on his boat. If you want to be protected
buy a steel hull. Im thinking on getting one of those ion dispersers
they use on oil tanks, not sure if they work but I know a guy who said
he would give me one free so what the heck.
