OT - Elder Mistreatment
Okay... I'm really really ****ed off now..... I'm putting this here to let
everyone know what happened..... read the following and know why!!! Both letters are an account of the occurrence that transpired..... I need to hit these scumballs where it hurts the most... in the wallet!! Damn but I'm just so friggin' ****ed off at this whole thing! Anyways.. it's long... two letters written to our local paper.... both about the same incident..... I'm starting a friggin' campaign. This woman is devastated about this and has been in tears. Any Help would be appreciated. As Follows: I am writing to you to express my disgust with the above company's policy and actions following an incident that recently occurred at the Zellers Store in the Bedford Place Mall. A friend of mine's elderly mother, living on a fixed income and suffering from Alzheimer's and Terminal Cancer, mistakenly walked out of the store with a pair of sunglasses without paying. The security people stopped her and gave her a document that stated that she would be charged with trespassing if she entered the mall during the next six months. She forgot to tell her son (and legal guardian) what had happened, and her son was unaware of the prior events or the trespassing warning issued by the security people. A few weeks later, my friend's mother went shopping at Zellers in the Bedford Place Mall again, and was stopped by security after removing a few pieces of Kleenex from a full box in the store. This time, security called the police and had the senior citizen charged with trespassing. Her son explained to security that he was unaware of the first incident or the earlier trespassing warning that they had apparently issued, and further advised them of his mother's fragile medical condition. He pointed out that, given the circumstances, the additional stress associated with a court appearance for trespassing was the last thing that his mother needed at this point. The security people ignored this, deciding instead to file formal trespassing charges against this 72 year old lady. While I can understand that Zellers and the Bedford Place Mall must protect their merchandise from theft (normally done by troubled teenagers or professional boosters), I cannot understand why they would persist in prosecuting my friend's mother. If their actions were aimed at deterring future incidents, under the circumstances their punitive action is severely misguided in my opinion. If a four year old takes a chocolate bar from Zellers without paying and is caught, do the security people issue a written warning to the child and instruct them to pass the document on to their parents? I am sure that if my friend had been advised of the first incident he would have spoken to security immediately to explain his mother's medical condition, and reassured security that he would accompany his mother when she went shopping there in the future. I have mentioned the above to several of my friends, and they are as appalled as I am about the seemingly total lack of compassion and human decency shown by Zellers and Bedford Place Mall security towards this harmless older lady. I would welcome an investigation by your newspaper into the above. Hopefully this would raise public awareness about the mistreatment of defenseless senior citizens by some large corporations. I would respectfully suggest that Zellers and the Bedford Place Mall have done more damage to their public image through their heavy-handed action than they have to gain by prosecuting this "case". My letter as follows: I thought this might be of interest to you.... It deals with corporate policy and the mistreatment of the elderly!! If you wish contacts to verify this please contact me and I will be happy to liaise your request to the party involved. I'm taking this to task because it irks me to think this is the sum total of respect and consideration I might one day have to face when in my golden years of retirement. I was informed by a friend that an acquaintance of mine's aged mother living on a fixed income and suffering from Alzheimer's and Terminal Cancer goes to Zellers Store at the Bedford Place Mall.. She had been at this branch before. Apparently she tried on a pair of sunglasses and forgot they were in her hand when she walked out... easily explainable but the store decided that although she had been a regular customer, they would issue her a document stating that if she returned to the store again within the next 6 months she would be charged with trespassing. So a month or two later she returned to the store... apparently she forgot to tell her son what had transpired... I wonder how that could have happened! He only found out after she had been arrested and charged for trespassing on Zellers property. They won't back down and are taking her to court because it's "Policy". NICE!!! She not only has her current medical difficulties to deal with.... but now thanks to this ignorant corporate entity's 'Policy'.... she now this added stress to cope with!! Is this indicative of the respect and value that ZELLERS places on it's elderly customers? Seriously now... I would expect this behaviour directed to adolescents or career criminals... and it may not amount to anything in a court of law considering the circumstances.... but the appalling lack of basic consideration and common decent human values totally evades me. Even after her son spoke to Zellers on her behalf and attempted to explain things... he was given the "Company Policy" speech! Enough is Enough!! I'm sick and tired of the manner in which these corporate entities act without due regard to circumstance or respect. Needless to say I'm ****ed and the objective of this letter is to let as many people know what happened as feasibly possible. I would appreciate any investigation and a full public accounting of ZELLERS!!! So that's it! I'm friggin' livid about this incident...... I'm not putting up with this crap from some pencil necked pimple faced wanna-be cop in a friggin' store stealin' what little time this person has left!!! For those unaware... One son to look after her... it's a learning experience... he's coping as
best he can.... he was unaware of the prior incident. Does the term "Compassion" or "Empathy" ring a bell? It should have been handled with more discretion than having the local constabulary called and having the lady arrested. She was in tears without understanding why it was happening to her. Don't blame the son.. he has enough on his plate looking after his mother. He tried to explain it to the security staff... they would have nothing to do with it. These are not are not wealthy people. This is not the USA This is Canada... we help elderly people across the street... we don't kick them out onto oncoming traffic. This is not a high crime area..... many seniors live around the area. I, like the woman's son, was doing my best to juggle a career, a family, and an ailing father living in a town some 25 miles distant. My ultimate choice was to place him in a retirement center. Eventually his condition exacerbated to the point that he had to be placed in a nursing facility. It was a tough decision, but perhaps one the woman's son will have to make sooner or later. Max |

No Katy... this was 2 separate incidents.... she has become progressively
worse in the last month. He was with her both times. The first time it happened he was not within proximity to know what happened since he believed she was safe to wander the store in mid day..and apparently she felt too embarrassed to tell him. The second time he explained to the security staff about her condition... they ignored him and filed charges.. having her arrested. Great that you can have the family and currency to afford the care you undertook with your MIL.... it's unfortunate that my friend had to give up his job to look after his mother and that they don't have your financial resources. I'm looking after my parents and can tell you that they often refuse to bend on requests. That doubles my work but I have a brother and family nearby to assist. This man has nobody to help him. ....and yes Katy... it is indeed a learning experience, unfortunately the curve is short due to the fact she has terminal cancer and a life expectancy of months. This woman is | devastated about this and has been in tears. | | Any Help would be appreciated. | | | Do you have a email address for the store? | | If so post it on every elder related site on the internet and request | that everyone send them an e-mail telling them what assholes they are, | and refuse to buy anything from them again unless they drop the | charges. | | Get Scotty to drive his peterbuildt thru the store. | | Go into the store and pretend to steal something in front of a | security camera, then beat the crap out of the security guard when he | grabs you walking out the door, then sue the store ;0) | | Joe | | | | | Joe | | | | | As Follows: | | I am writing to you to express my disgust with the above company's | policy and actions following an incident that recently occurred at the | Zellers Store in the Bedford Place Mall. A friend of mine's elderly mother, | living on a fixed income and suffering from Alzheimer's and Terminal Cancer, | mistakenly walked out of the store with a pair of sunglasses without paying. | The security people stopped her and gave her a document that stated that she | would be charged with trespassing if she entered the mall during the next | six months. She forgot to tell her son (and legal guardian) what had | happened, and her son was unaware of the prior events or the trespassing | warning issued by the security people. A few weeks later, my friend's | mother went shopping at Zellers in the Bedford Place Mall again, and was | stopped by security after removing a few pieces of Kleenex from a full box | in the store. This time, security called the police and had the senior | citizen charged with trespassing. Her son explained to security that he was | unaware of the first incident or the earlier trespassing warning that they | had apparently issued, and further advised them of his mother's fragile | medical condition. He pointed out that, given the circumstances, the | additional stress associated with a court appearance for trespassing was the | last thing that his mother needed at this point. The security people | ignored this, deciding instead to file formal trespassing charges against | this 72 year old lady. | | While I can understand that Zellers and the Bedford Place Mall must protect | their merchandise from theft (normally done by troubled teenagers or | professional boosters), I cannot understand why they would persist in | prosecuting my friend's mother. If their actions were aimed at deterring | future incidents, under the circumstances their punitive action is severely | misguided in my opinion. If a four year old takes a chocolate bar from | Zellers without paying and is caught, do the security people issue a written | warning to the child and instruct them to pass the document on to their | parents? I am sure that if my friend had been advised of the first | incident he would have spoken to security immediately to explain his | mother's medical condition, and reassured security that he would accompany | his mother when she went shopping there in the future. | | I have mentioned the above to several of my friends, and they are as | appalled as I am about the seemingly total lack of compassion and human | decency shown by Zellers and Bedford Place Mall security towards this | harmless older lady. I would welcome an investigation by your newspaper | into the above. Hopefully this would raise public awareness about the | mistreatment of defenseless senior citizens by some large corporations. I | would respectfully suggest that Zellers and the Bedford Place Mall have done | more damage to their public image through their heavy-handed action than | they have to gain by prosecuting this "case". | | My letter as follows: | | I thought this might be of interest to you.... | | It deals with corporate policy and the mistreatment of the elderly!! | | If you wish contacts to verify this please contact me and I will be happy to | liaise your request to the party involved. I'm taking this to task because | it irks me to think this is the sum total of respect and consideration I | might one day have to face when in my golden years of retirement. | | I was informed by a friend that an acquaintance of mine's aged mother living | on a fixed income and suffering from Alzheimer's and Terminal Cancer goes to | Zellers Store at the Bedford Place Mall.. She had been at this branch | before. Apparently she tried on a pair of sunglasses and forgot they were in | her hand when she walked out... easily explainable but the store decided | that although she had been a regular customer, they would issue her a | document stating that if she returned to the store again within the next 6 | months she would be charged with trespassing. | | So a month or two later she returned to the store... apparently she forgot | to tell her son what had transpired... I wonder how that could have | happened! He only found out after she had been arrested and charged for | trespassing on Zellers property. They won't back down and are taking her to | court because it's "Policy". NICE!!! She not only has her current medical | difficulties to deal with.... but now thanks to this ignorant corporate | entity's 'Policy'.... she now this added stress to cope with!! Is this | indicative of the respect and value that ZELLERS places on it's elderly | customers? | | Seriously now... I would expect this behaviour directed to adolescents or | career criminals... and it may not amount to anything in a court of law | considering the circumstances.... but the appalling lack of basic | consideration and common decent human values totally evades me. Even after | her son spoke to Zellers on her behalf and attempted to explain things... he | was given the "Company Policy" speech! | | Enough is Enough!! I'm sick and tired of the manner in which these | corporate entities act without due regard to circumstance or respect. | | Needless to say I'm ****ed and the objective of this letter is to let as | many people know what happened as feasibly possible. | | I would appreciate any investigation and a full public accounting of | ZELLERS!!! | | So that's it! | I'm friggin' livid about this incident...... I'm not putting up with this | crap from some pencil necked pimple faced wanna-be cop in a friggin' store | stealin' what little time this person has left!!! | | For those unaware... ZELLERS is a Canadian Retail Chain like Wal-Mart... | | CM |

Yeah...well you don't know anything about the last three years then.... So explain. Here's your opportunity. But to simply brand a man an "asshole" because he is struggling to deal with an aging parent while maintaining a life of his own would indicate a complete lack of understanding on your part. This is something almost every one of us will ultimately deal with. Some of us will be lucky enough to have other family members to share the burden. But some will have to deal with it alone, and hope and pray their decisions are the right ones. And they will bear the burden of guilt alone as well. I could have dumped my father into a nursing home at the first sign of trouble and, believe it or not, everyone would have been hunky dory with that. But I couldn't do that to Dad. So I was the whipping boy for all the local busy bodies and my relatives living too far away to be anything but an irritation to the process. To say "Yeah . . well you don't know anything about the last three years then . . ." is unsatisfactory. Unless you've walked in my shoes, or those of the woman's son, you have no right to judge. Yes, we have walked that mile, and several more, so I know whereof I speak. Not even close. You are the antagonists, not the bearer of the lonely burden of championing the elder individual's wants and desires for the remainder of her life. You feel no guilt because you stand apart from the woman's champion ( the "stubborn" sister) and cast aspersions, rather than make decisions which may or may not be popular with the remainder of the family. And you've only had to support your husband's beliefs on this matter. It's radically different when it's your own father or mother. My father didn't blow up microwaves, nor was he even a threat to his own life. He was simply not the astute and brilliant man he had been during his entire life, prior to his illness. And my family and his local friends simply couldn't deal with that. Essentially they wanted him out of the way, if for no other reason than to remove a subtle reminder of their own imminent mortality and morbidity. When he was in the facility (5 years), less than 10% of his many friends, and none of his extended family (the antagonists) made even one visit to this man who spent his life loving and helping them. If there are assholes here, it was those who wanted him locked away, out of sight, so their fragile existences wouldn't be tarnished by the sight of a once-vital man decaying in front of their eyes. You still have a long way to go to walk in my shoes, or those of the woman's son. But your tendency to judge him an asshole doesn't surprise me. I'm sure most of the antagonists in my father's case referred to me in similar terms. Max |

I could have dumped my father into a nursing home at the first sign of trouble And that attitude is the problem....true..some people "dump" their relatives in nursing homes to get rid of the problem. That makes them assholes just like the guy who was unaware of what was going on because he was too involved with everything else. We see Mom every day. We're facing this now with Janie's mother (Alzheimer's, in a facility) and her father (living independently). We, like you, don't give a rodent's posterior if he spends all his money caring for her and himself. To the contrary, we believe, as good conservatives do, that the gummint (read: us taxpayers) should not have to bear that burden. Well, I can understand your anger. If you've got the time to fight this one
that's great - but then why not go bigger? Why not go for changes in Canada's protection laws for people with mental difficulties. What will stop this from happening at some other store? It seems like you have the necessary motivation, so why not think bigger? Look at what happened to 86 year old reporter Mike Wallace in New York yesterday (arrested and hand cuffed for having the audacity to ASK QUESTIONS to a cop!). The abuse paradigm in our police systems has indeed trickled down to all areas of security. Imagine 2 angry cops man-handling an old man like that, and then reporting that he "was disrespectful and appeared close to lunging." Jesus Christ, the paperwork they write can make anyone look like a violent criminal, deserving of the beating the cops give them. Here's what the Rev Casy said in "The Grapes of Wrath" when he was asked why the cops arrested him: "I talked back." John Steinbeck knew what he was talking about. Scout "Capt. You openly speak of what kind of care giver you are and I commend you for it. You have also over the past two years tracked your Dad's health and have been on top of it and noticed the changes...and yet, you've been working and sailing and having a life. So why can you do that and this other guy can't? He was negligent and unobservant and I have no pity for him in this situation, on;y for his poor mother...and BTW, I have all along agreed that the store is very wrong.... -- katysails s/v Chanteuse Kirie Elite 32 http://katysails.tripod.com "Women and cats will do as they please, and men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea." - Robert A. OT - Elder Mistreatment
That may well be Katy.... but I can't really see how you can stand judgment
on someone when they are trying... and it is a trial & error situation for us all!! My Dad always told me that the only people who don't screw up are the ones not doing anything! As far as the Lady's Son is concerned... he's devastated... he's now more aware... he's learned from this but that will not mitigate the damage nor the results. Zellers is proceeding with the case in court. I get pretty riled up when I see Bully picking on someone weaker.... the last thing I want to hear is someone telling me it was the victim's fault because they shouldn't have ventured there. In your case it's blame for the son who shouldn't have let her wander there. I don't see it that way.... and it irks me to no end that you would. We are all due basic common respect. Now ... I've worked a nine hour day.. was up at 0530 hrs to complete the chores prior to driving the hour to town and came back to find my Dad had taken full advantage that Mom had to go for Physiotherapy, [I picked her up after my brother dropped her off]... left the garden hose on and flooded the tomatoes, removed the phone from the hook and no calls came through.... but not before he buttered and jellied an entire loaf of bread into neat little sandwiches... placing each one in a line... he still does not know why. Yeah... we left him at home alone.... I guess I must be an asshole as well. Odd... but I wouldn't trade the aggravation for all the tea in china. Regarding my rash words.... In retrospect ... you are correct... and I apologize for my statement regarding your religious beliefs... it was uncalled for and unwarranted. That said.... I'm left sorely disappointed in your judgment on this matter and it's more than obvious we shall remain miles apart on this topic. OT - Elder Mistreatment
My niece is over to the house almost everyday. She has seen her grandparents
slip down that slope but is involved in everything they do. She is the light of their lives and we have discussed this aging topic with her. She'll help her grandfather and grandmother with chores and forces them to take walks with her. She helps me with killing the meat birds but is very careful and attentive to the livestock. She knows her responsibilities and has a firm grasp on the realities of life. These are the benefits of having your family together..... she's only 6 years old. She's way ahead of her peers in comprehension of the world and will develop into a fine young lady. I pity the false protection offered by the well intentioned but mistaken majority. CM "katysails" wrote in message ... | | Even more to the point, our kids need to realize that about us, their | parents. | | Because of Grandma, my kids are aware and make it a point to go to the | nursing home, even though she doesn't remember them...and my grandkids go | too....there is no shielding from reality....we have residents whose | families actually do not bring children because they can't bear them to see | what has become of their grandparent...so the image of the sweet, kindly | person they once knew stays in their mind instead of facing the realities of | life...is on par with people who don't allow children to go to funerals | because they shouldn't see grief and suffering.... |

I concur Max..... I already have my parent's "Money"... I'm spending it on
them! I carry my own bills.... I don't need hand-outs or charity. CM "Maxprop" wrote in message link.net... | | "katysails" wrote in message | | I'm not going to drag the scenario of what we went through on this public | forum, Max, but suffice it to say, the "sister protector" as you called | her | was after one thing...money...and if you sit through Care Conferences that | involve family members, that is what motivates most people in their | decisions about nursing homes, health care, etc. Mom's money is now being | used to take care of her. We do not care if there is nothing left over | when | she goes. Unfortunately, that was not the case on the other side. the | other thing is that she lives in Minnesota, removed from the situation. | And | like I said, we see Mom every day. We go in at mealtime and feed her. I | do | some of her personal care. So, in retrospect, your judgment of me is | about | par with mine of you...and that's the last of this discussion. | | Yes, sadly I'm aware that money often plays a part in such situations. | We're facing this now with Janie's mother (Alzheimer's, in a facility) and | her father (living independently). We, like you, don't give a rodent's | posterior if he spends all his money caring for her and himself. To the | contrary, we believe, as good conservatives do, that the gummint (read: us | taxpayers) should not have to bear that burden. But my in-laws see things | differently, and would love to cash in someday. Such was not the case in | Dad's situation. Neither my brother nor I wanted his money. So that was | not an issue. | | Nuf said. | | Max | | |

....and it happens if we let it Scout... only if we let it.
CM "Scout" wrote in message ... | Well, I can understand your anger. If you've got the time to fight this one | that's great - but then why not go bigger? Why not go for changes in | Canada's protection laws for people with mental difficulties. What will stop | this from happening at some other store? It seems like you have the | necessary motivation, so why not think bigger? | Look at what happened to 86 year old reporter Mike Wallace in New York | yesterday (arrested and hand cuffed for having the audacity to ASK QUESTIONS | to a cop!). The abuse paradigm in our police systems has indeed trickled | down to all areas of security. Imagine 2 angry cops man-handling an old man | like that, and then reporting that he "was disrespectful and appeared close | to lunging."
