I know, I figured he deserves to be a genius in at least one category.

Katy,
You are passing an awful lot of Breeds with one brush stoke. Terriers, Hounds, Bassets, are just a few I'd rate with the poodle. Rate them over Poodles. You have to consider what they have been bred for Just my comments. Don't want to get into an other OT discussion. Ole Thom |

Terriers, Hounds, Bassets, are just a few I'd rate with the poodle. Rate them over Poodles. You have to consider what they have been bred for The problem is, Thom, that you are looking at specific members of breeds you have known...yes, there are exceptional qualities to each breed, but when the industry and science look at the breeds of dogs over the world, the results are that border collies are number 1 and standard poodles are number two in the rankings...as a breed whole....I've seen several jack Russell's that think their owners under the table all the time, but then again, I have seen several that are dumber than a box of rocks...in general, according to the experts, hounds do not fit the category of "smart"...they perform their personal functions as dogs very well,, they track...but have you ever tried to teach an afghan hound anything beyond coursing? They are, as a breed whole, lovable but stupid. (Now all the afghan hound people are going to come out and slay me...go look up the statistics people) -- katysails s/v Chanteuse Kirie Elite 32 http://katysails.tripod.com "Women and cats will do as they please, and men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea." - Robert A. Katy,
I'm not putting Poodles down. They are smart, lovable companion but they have their slow witted member also. The two dumbest dogs I've ever seen were a matched pair of Std Poodles. They also were probably the most loveable two dogs I've ever seen. I was only in my teens and working in kennels. It was an awful time for dogs. The early days of WW2. Their masters were be Drafted and the dog people were going crazy finding homes for them. Std sized Poodles were a problem due to size. These two lived with me for close to a year before I found a home for them. Loveable they were but smart they were not. Now, I'll have to ask this question again. How do you give a dog an IQ test? What are the standards that are used? I'm sorry about getting into another Off Topic discussion but Dogs are very close to Sailing with me. They certainly rate better than politics Ole Thom |

Like I said...you are referring to individuals and not to the breed...overall the breed is rated as number 2 by experts in the dog world... -- katysails s/v Chanteuse Kirie Elite 32 http://katysails.tripod.com "Women and cats will do as they please, and men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea." - Robert A. How do you give a dog an IQ test? What are the standards that are used? The "Bible" of the dog world on this subject is: _The Intelligence of Dogs: Canine Consciousness and Capabilities_ by Stanley Coren, a psychologist. It is not a dry treatise on the subject, but is insightful. -- katysails s/v Chanteuse Kirie Elite 32 http://katysails.tripod.com "Women and cats will do as they please, and men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea." - Robert A. A friend of mine had a dog, which I believe was some
kind of terrier... it had some brain surgery, and when they got done, it looked like a punk rocker with spiked hair. It was pretty dumb to begin with, hense the name Bongo, but after, the only way you could tell it recognized you was when it blinked. That was one strange dog. Someone finally ran it over in driveway. Too stupid to get out of the way when the car started... liked to sleep next to the back tire. -- Jonathan Ganz (j gan z @ $ail no w.c=o=m) http://www.sailnow.com "If there's no wind, row." |
