Is the Hunter 285 a slug?

I passed one the other day like it was sitting still, (in lite air). Maybe
it was the sailor?

Don't know what the one you saw was doing and I don't know how fast they are
but I do know that they were used for the Liberty Cup in N.Y. one year.
On another note I think they are a pretty good value at times. Mid 80s 28
footer, standing headroom, H&C pressure water, inboard diesel, not bad looking,
decent amount of sail area. I've seen them advertised as low as the mid teens.

Surly You Jest Loco!!

Fast... No!
Upgrade from a Mac26X..... barely!
Assumption of Quality...... Base-less.

Loco... having sailed and rescued one.... I can tell you it's a POS!
It has a very narrow wind limit and points badly. It's useless down wind.

The Rescue... The Hunter 28 was having trouble.... going up wind then
falling off.... people hailing me..... so I scooted out to them from my
mooring in Yellowknife Bay. I got aboard and was informed the wind was too
strong and the boat would not sail up the channel.[28kts] I sailed it up the
channel...... 9 tacks later I realized it wasn't able to do any better than
that..... I did the same a half hour earlier in 3 tacks....... same
conditions! ....with a Double Ended Clam Crusher!!!!

Hunter has made a number of 28s. Probably 3 in the 80s. Sure you got the
right one? Why would they use the 285 for the Liberty Cup? Wouldn't America's
Cup drivers be bitchin?

It's not a bad looking boat, for a Hunter. We were both close-hauled,
adjusting for the light shifting wind. I thought I'd be courteous and pass
him to leeward. I kept getting his dirty air. So I pinched up, and passed
to windward.

No.. not certain it was the identical model. The vessel sailed like a pig
though. This was about 8 years ago. I got a close look at it when I helped
him haul it out. For all intents and purposes it resembled a sturdy version
of a Mac26X without the engine well. Up to that point I didn't really have
an opinion on Hunters... having seen so few. Since then I've sailed their
brand new [at the time] 31 footer.... to say I was less than impressed is
an understatement. It looked reasonable... nice lines and all... but the
sailing characteristics sucked backwash. The joke around the marina was that
the Hunter 31 was the only boat the Bayfield 25 could sail faster than.

Maybe... then again if it's a class fleet... it's just a matter of seeing
which crew can make their Viva Vauxhalls of sail go the fastest.

Oh, so you felt you should type the following even though you didn't know
what you were talking about:

By the way all I said was it seemed to be a good VALUE at times and stated
why. And it is a good VALUE if it can be bought in the teens.

We have one opposite us at the marina, dimensionally pretty close to my
boat, decent exterior fittings, definitely faster than my 28 also, decent
looking boat.
