Has anyone here actually seen a shark attack or the victim of one?
Raise your hands... yes, I've seen the aftermath up close. I was walking down the beach in north county San Diego. Came across a guy standing in the shallow surf in a deserted section of the beach, just him and his girl friend. He was standing in a sloshing pool of blood, she was hysterical. He was clearly in shock... just standing there. I got him on dry land, then took a look at his foot/ ankle area. A big piece was missing/hanging on the lower back calf. I figured he didn't have much time because of loss of blood, didn't have anything to tie it off or compress it. His gf was not in any shape to go and get help. So, after a lot of coaxing, I got her to help him compress the wound with their hands. Then, I went for help. Fortunately, I was much younger and the normal 40 minute trip took only about half that time. I never went back after the paramedics went for him, but I heard he was ok. -- "j" ganz @@ www.sailnow.com "Bart Senior" wrote in message t... I have some better ones. I stepped on a little nurse shark on St Pete Beach about 10 years ago...I ran very fast.... My brother was scuba diving while he was stationed in Hawaii and a shark wouldn't leave him alone so he planted his fist in its' nose and it left.... -- katysails s/v Chanteuse Kirie Elite 32 http://katysails.tripod.com "Women and cats will do as they please, and men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea." - Robert A. Yup... two guys spearfishing off Shark Point in Brewer's Bay... on the point
before you enter Cane Garden Bay. They cleaned their catch and tied the fish to a rope... then swam to their boat from shoretowing the stringer of fish.. The Lemon Shark bit at the fish on the stringer and ended up removing a large chunk of calf muscle. Lucky for the victim there was a conference of vascular surgeons on the island at the time. I used my towel to stem some of the bleeding. We loaded him into a Suzuki and drove him to the hospital. If that shark had been interested in anything but the fish... neither of those two would be alive now. Shark attacks are largely based on the ignorance of the humans in the water. We are not their natural food source. Nurse Sharks won't bite you unless you man handle them. I had a ride on an 8 foot Nurse Shark in the Samoas... I hung on to the dorsal... for about 30 seconds.. then the shark turned on the power and left me spinning at 45 feet under water. I was skin diving at the time... no tanks. What a Blast! We could have crossed paths and never knew it. Last time I was there were baby Stingrays by the hundreds in very shallow water. I didn't want to get in the water, but the locals told me to "shuffle my feet" in the water and they would leave. Seemed a bit strange to me... LP |

We had to do that this April when we went to Fort Myers....they lay on the sand in shallow water sunning themselves and they blend in...they're really rather benign but if you get whipped by the tail it's quite painful, even from a little one.... -- katysails s/v Chanteuse Kirie Elite 32 http://katysails.tripod.com "Women and cats will do as they please, and men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea." - Robert A.
