I didn't want to get in the water, but the locals told me to
"shuffle my feet" in the water and they would leave. Seemed a bit strange
to me...

We had to do that this April when we went to Fort Myers....they lay on the
sand in shallow water sunning themselves and they blend in...they're really
rather benign but if you get whipped by the tail it's quite painful, even
from a little one....
