The report doesn't say how the pirates were armed, I assume they were.

As for "trying to fight with guns," what are you trying to say? That any
attempt to resist the piracy would be futile? What if the pirates had
decided to cut their throats, or just drop them overboard? Leaves no
witnesses... they'd be just as dead. I do not advocate carrying firearms
but it is not necessarily the wisest course to trust the good intentions

What is disturbing to me about this incident is that it's in well

I do like the picture of you as John Wayne taking on a 20 or so

Assumption on your part, Oz. 20 poorly armed men won't have any
problems taking over an unarmed vessel if they can catch it. Different
scenario if they're tackling a vessel where one or more people have a
good heavy calibre rifle and the skill/will to use it. I don't have any
real doubts as to my ability to seriously ruin someone's day if I had a

Problem as I see it is that by the time you've decided you're in deep

OTOH I'd have no qualms about putting a round over the wheelhouse if I

Sure, an assumption, but the reports of various incidents worldwide
seem to indicate that the majority of pirates are very heavily armed.
Reports also seem to indicate that resistance quite often results in
the most dire of circumstances for those involved.

I recall an acquaintance of mine who was a piracy victim. He was armed
but decided that he would not resist as it was evident that the
pirates were much better equipped. They boarded and looted the vessel.
He protested when one of the pirates groped a woman passenger and
promptly lost his forearm to a machete. He was tossed overboard and
was lucky enough to grab a trailing line, stem the blood flow and
reboard after they had left.

Philippines?

He still sails but now states taht he will never show any sign of non
compliance if in the same situation..and that even showing a weapon
would have resulted in almost certain death.

Yeah, look, I don't disagree. If you resist, you'd better win because
if you shoot a couple and then lose, you & everyone else is probably
going to get killed. It's a very high risk strategy. Like firing a
warning shot - pointless unless the next one is aimed at the wheelhouse
and the one after at the helmsman.

I was on a Taiwanese fishing boat back in the 80's which had got held
up by Indonesian pirates on the way down to the Australian Fishing
Zone. They had a line of 50 cal holes through the wheelhouse because
they didn't stop fast enough. They reckoned the Indonesian Navy did it
- 'one day Navy, next day pirates' and I don't doubt that was possible
too. There's nothing anyone on a small boat can do against a 50 cal (or
even a 30 cal) machine gun.

As I said my strategy is to be somewhere else.

PDW

If the bad guys have heavy automatic weapons, there's little point in
firing a rifle at them.

"A for what's it worth" story.

I was talking to a blue water sailor, years ago, When I still lived back
East. I was talking about sailing my own vessel thru the "Canal"

He said, " When you leave US Territorial Water make sure you are sailing
in a group if possible. He was sailing across the Gulf Of Mexico, with
his family, sailing alone, when he was overtaken by Pirates. They too,
were in a fishing boat. They had weapons aboard but he elected to not
use them. He told his wife to go below and hide the guns below and
behind the fresh water tank.

She went below but instead of hiding the weapons, she popped up the
forward hatch with her Beretta and took aim on the Pirate ship.

She never got a shot off. She was killed with a single shot. They said
they were zeroed in on the cockpit and hatches.

They striped his vessel pretty much as describe in the article, offering
apologies about his wife. Along with the Electronic and selection from
the freezer were his guns.

It was after that story I made the decision not to have guns or a
freezer on my boat. I've keep to it thru four boats.

By the way, I've never made it thru the "Canal"

there head. And your even stupider to think they are going to leave
you alone if you ball up in the fetal position in the corner of your
cockpit like the big pussy you are.

These kind of thieves have plenty
of weapons.

So do I.

The best thing to do is not to get too agressive
with them.

Sounds like a typical left wing loser.

The best thing to do is kill them before they can kill you.

Bet you feel the same way about the terrorist, just do not get to
agressive with them they might hurt you huh? Follows along with the
left wing liberal agenda. They can kill you or your crew, steal from
you, rape your women, but dont get to agressive with them, they might
act like barbarians.

Go suck your thumb sissy boy. Thats the best your capable of.

Yeah and if they had tried to fight with guns, they would have been

dead.

Bull, If they had a proper rifle they could of shot the helmsman of
the fishing vessel at 100 yards off. Pop a couple hundred rounds into
any wooden hull boat at the water line & the pirates would have more
important things to do than ram your boat. Your a victim waiting to
happen Johnathan. Anyone dumb enough to let any shady looking fishing
vessel approch them in the open ocean is asking to be killed and or
robbed.

Don't stand up and fight for anything you have, just hand it over to a
pack of thiefs. They were lucky the thiefs did not put a bullet in
thier heads while they were tied up.

It's illegal to modify the seer. If you're caught with it, plan on
spending a long time in prison.

Joe,

How do you know they're Pirates at a 100 yards?

Ole Thom

Several dead give aways Ol Thom. Like a fishing vessel with no fishing
gear riding high in the water, or unwilling to answer a radio, no
running lights, vectoring in on you after you change course, unwilling
to alter course when you fire across the bow ect... We do not have any
pirates I know of in the gulf but Ive seen a lot of drug runners and
its odvious what they are doing by location and the way they act

Just use common sence, they are not going to be flying a jolly roger
but in the open ocean most sane sensiable people that approach another
vessel are going to make contact dont ya think? Even then its smart
to keep them covered as they come along side. If they are not asking
for trouble I do not think anyone would be upset that you are armed
and not taking any risk. Most people that get raided are dumb enough
to let people board under a ruse. Like wanna buy fish, have water,
need fuel, anything that will get you to let your guard down. There
aint no sheriff gonna come to the rescue so your on your own.

Yeah, but underneath it's a good boat. His is just a piece of crap.

Not that your opinion means much, but why do you feel my boat is a
piece of crap?

It's a 100 time better that any cal 20 dink that a 12 year old could
mow lawns for a week and earn enough money to buy.

Shhhh! That's my strategy. Have a boat that looks so run-down that
nobody bothers you! Paint rust streaks down the hull, whatever.

He was asking the NG's gay boy gaynzy who sails a gay boat in the gay
capitol of the world. So tell us gaynz why are you so scared of guns,
is it the big bad loud boom sound that hurts your ears? Or the bruise
that they leave on your shoulders? You worried your boy friend might
thing you had a hissy fit with another boy?
