Doug and Katie are Boobs!
A quick glance at today's cable guide.....
Fast Food----Doc on high speed predators Car Crash---Doc on technology used to make cars safer David Mamet's Homocide---Unusual enrty from Mamet about a cop who becomes a Jewish radical. About Schmidt----Fine film with Nicholson playing a lost widower The Apartment---Simply great writing! Pcycho---The first 20 minutes is like water over a pebble....it just flows, but always exposes new details. BTW, watching an education program IS interactive, unless you're suffering from brain trauma! Yeah, nothing worth Katie or Doug's time! Go clean something instead of absorbing art and info. Stay small minded on your "clean" trawler, Doug. Learning about nature won't wash the Rosarie beads, right Katie? Small people. Small minds. Small lives. RB |

And all better books than movies, that is IF you have a minds eye and
an imagination. Joseph Stefano's adaptation was a work of genius according to Bloch, whose Novel pales by comparison. Stefano, like Serling, was a teleplay pioneer. David Mamet's homocide was written by him for the screen. Try again. RB |

Stroll down to your local Volvo shop, better yet attend a SAE
congress expo and education seminar on the subject. The point is, Josie, that someone with a casual interest need not be in the dark about such things. I can learn about this technology with ease and IF it truly interests me, go the extra step. I'm a long time observer of the sky, planets and stars, but that learning process started with movies and TV. RB |

from brain trauma! They tell you you listen. Calm down, Josie. They're not "telling" you anything. There's an off button. You have control...or perhaps that's your problem. RB |

The new crowd in
Hollywood in a large part are scum putting out mindless crap. The "new crowd" is just a small part of cinema today. Many fine movies are made, just like many fine paintings are painted. You just have to care to find them. If you have little interest in the arts, move on. RB |

For NYer it be smarter to go to central park and watch the redtail
hawk and peragrin(sp?)falcons (the fastest predator on earth) snatch pigeons out of the air. Shot footage of that many times when I worked for the NY Zoological Society for a couple of years. The doc lets us have a look at animals most people will never see. I guess that makes them unimportant to people like you, Josie. But others want to learn. RB |

Nutsy,
You're changing stories again;-------you told the group Astronomy came from your Uncle. who is a Pro You seem to have trouble, for a writer, holding your Story Line. If you like TV & movies, have at it. It your life, you live it. It is strange how health and exersize freaks seem to take pleasure in living other peoples lives. They don't seem to enjoy their own. But you don't look at stars anymore?
Cheers I currently use a Celestron 9.25 for most observing. I use it mostly in PA where the skies are darker. I used to own a Dynascope and a little Questar for travel. My current scope has a computer GOTO drive, but I still miss using setting circles! RB |

Is that a CGE mount and a 9.25 with XLT coatings and a CF tube? Are you doing any photography? Cheers |

I traded up for it because the CF tube made a big difference in how quickly I could start a session. I beleive it's the best small portable around and it can provide refractor like images at times. I also owned a C8 Classic, which was also very nice. I probably should have stuck with the C8 because I used it more-easier to set up. Which scope do you own? RB |

Wow! He got me there! RB |

My list would include Ciderhouse Rules and Millenium Man just for
starters I don't think I saw millenium Man. Cider House Rules was good, but I think World According to Garp is the better Irving adaptation. RB |
Doug and Katie are Boobs!
I'm afraid I didn't like Garp..the book was OK, the film..wellll.
The movie is awkward at times, but I liked the script which managed to touch on key moments on the book...and Jenny Fields was truly brought to life. Owen Meany is thought to be an impossible adaptation after many failed efforts. I'll put Millenium Man on my list. RB |

A few better
To kill a mockinbird, 12 angry men, Old man of the sea, the cain munity, the sand pebble, Bullit, ect.................. All good movies, but not "better" by any defintion other than yours. Cain Mutiny was a another high point for Bogart. Old man and the Sea is a good effort. By any personal standard, Bullit is horribly dated. Papion is "better" for McQueen fans, especially if you read the book. RB |

The Caine Mutiny is excellent, one of the few movies I've seen that held up to the book (although it was far less detailed of course). I also like the African Queen, another classic Bogart movie. One of these days we're going to watch The Maltese Falcon. DSK |

We could go on for a long time listing favorites, such as the often forgotten Of Mice and Men....probably the purest adaptation ever made or just one year later...The Grapes of Wrath, a film that Henry Fonda traded his contract in for the chance to play Tom Joad. My point to Katie and Doug was that they foolishly let Baywatch and Gilligan's Island tycast a whole art medium. They missed out, especially now when new technology allows the medium to expand. For example, Monsters Inc. is probably one of the best movies ever made, certainly among the best animated films. To casually miss out on the power of such work is a narrow minded and obvious loss. I can also access a 14" remote controlled SCT (Meade on Princeton mount) and a 21" Zeiss though the astromical society. The latter gives amazing views down the eyepiece even though it's in the city. Both my scopes are on GT German eq. mounts. I also have some 77mm semi apo binoculars on a Manfrotto based mount (made by me) and some 50mm binos for boat use. We get such good seeing here -even in my backyard. Cheers |

Donal wrote: I've got a cheap Tasco (optimum mag 105x). I'd like to get something better, but I know sod all about telescopes. Tasco are not generally very good instruments. Anything sold in a department store is just a toy. I'd say you really get what you pay for. Quality lenses and mirrors are expensive and as size goes up the price goes up faster. A rough guide, don't look at less than 3" aperture costing about $1000 (the smallest worthwhile aperture). A 5" Mak or 8" SCT might also be found for that sort of figure. Some Dobs are good value and you can get about a 8-10" mirror for that. Check out Meade and Celestron as starters. Then you'll have to add eyepeices (good ones are more than $150)etc. I'd recommend you go to a star party, astronomers are really nice and helpful and will help you get started. Quality second hand kit can be good but good optics tend to hold their price... Cheers |

I don't prefer movies, except anything directed by Mel Gibson. I spend my
time reading The Bible, doing good deeds and preparing for everlasting life with all the glory and power. Amen! You will, along with all of Hollywood, burn in hell! I spread the word of the Lord from my binnacle/pulpit through a 120 watt audio amplifier. Moorings up and down the eastern seaboard have heard the good word - like it or not! I have my son go out in the dinghy with the collection plate and good Christian sailors are mighty generous for they know the power and glory! Amen! God bless you fine folk and show a little mercy on those destined for eternal damnation such as Bobsprit and Ganz. Halleluiah! BC "Bobsprit" wrote in message ... I've got a cheap Tasco (optimum mag 105x). I'd like to get something
better, but I know sod all about telescopes. Donal, if you're willing to spend some cash, it's hard to beat a Celestron 8 for the money, in any of it's incarnations. Sets up fast, very portable and quite powerful. There are a host of scopes out there from companies like Meade, Orion, Astrophysics and so on. I think the best bet is to find a local star party and try out some scopes of different designs and see what you like. Some big light buckets (generally 12" or larger mirrors) can really make you gasp. You might think it's worth the trouble to own one. Ditto on Nav's comment on Tasco. If you want a low cost scope, here's one that would bring years of fun: http://www.telescope.com/jump.jsp?it...CT&path=1%2C2% 2C4%2C8&KickerID=360&KICKER If you have some serious questions about any of this feel free to e-mail me directly. If more people spent time with a telescope, they'd gain some perspective and stop trying to kill eachother! RB |
