The US is responsible for one quarter of fossil fuel that is burned on this planet, and you have one thirtieth of the world's population. That means that you generate seven times more pollution per person than the rest of the world's inhabitants. Do you really think that cigarette butts will have the same impact on the environment as Global Warming? Your big fridges, car engines, air-conditioning, TV's, etc have a far bigger effect on the environment than cigarette butts. People in glass houses shouldn't throw stones. Regards Donal -- |

Donal,
You are stereotyping the lifestyle here. I have a smallish refrigerator...14 cubic ft...we drive cars that get 30 mpg and we buy them new and drive them until they die...we use our air conditioner maybe 5 days a summer and never I never use the air conditioner in my car but prefer to have the window open...You don't have a TV? We have a small set in the living room and then we have the old tv in the family room that we very seldom use except when the grandkids are here and want to play with the Play Station...I do my dishes by hand, di not have an insinkerator or a trash compacter...we recycle all out pop bottles and reuse out plastic milk cartons until they literally are no longer usable...Think is, most of my friends live the same way...You can't judge us from tv shows....just like we shouldn't assume that you are all like Hyacinth Bucket or Benny Hill. And I live in a brick house, not glass...it's much more energy efficient and you don't lose all that heat through the glass..... -- katysails s/v Chanteuse Kirie Elite 32 http://katysails.tripod.com "Women and cats will do as they please, and men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea." - Robert A. If you don't have at least a small home theater audio system to use when
watching movies your missing out on loads of fun. Not just fun. There is a lot of fine cinematic art, music and shows that come to life on a proper system. It's not about being bigger or louder. With a little TV and it's small speaker you simply miss out on a lot of what the artists worked so hard to create. I'm using DTS and SACD and I can't believe what I was missing when I was listening to classical music before. In some respects it can be better than being at the live show! RB |

We go to the movie theater to watch movies...
Not a well rounded cultural statement is it? There are many wonderful films that are not showing up at the local theatres. DVD is one of the few ways to see them. Also: If you enjoy music, a home theatre is stunning to say the least. RB |

We go to the movie theater to watch movies....the only time I used our VCR
in the past year . A brand name DVD player can be had for $119. Picture would be much better than tape and Dolby 5.1 digital soundtrack is tossed in for free. Save the VCR for watching old birthday parties. S/V Express 30 "Ringmaster" "No shirt, no skirt, full service" |

Oh OK, so we just ignore the plastic bags, fish nets and allthe other crap because we have some bigger issues? Sure Donal...sure. I was talking about bio-degradable cigarette butts. Are you really stupid enough to compare them to plastic bags? Like many people, you like to look down your nose at people who have a bad habit that you don't have. It makes you feel superior. Well, let me tell you that there is no end to this kind of thinking. Fat people are also in a minority, and already there is talk about the drain that they place on the health service. Sports fishermen are a minority, and we are seeing discussion about the unnecessary pain caused to fish. We all engage in pursuits that have an effect on the environment. Once you join the "something must be done about it" brigade, you guarantee that one of your own pursuits will eventually be banned. Regards Donal -- |

You will find that you enjoy something that the majority of people don't approve of. Perhaps you like to drive an inefficient car?? Over here, we already have a sliding tax scale that penalises gas guzzlers. Each year we get a step nearer to a total ban. Soon, anything over three litres will be banned. After that, two litres will be the maximum. Regards Donal -- |
