How Much Do You Really Sail?

Now...stop the lying and posturing. Let's all be honest. How much do you REALLY
sail your own boat. We sail Alien an average of 3 times a week and a bit more
in the last months. Last summer we only managed time for 5 short trips, the
longest being 5 days and the others only weekends.
It's not a competition folks. Some of you may be working hard and can't manage
a lot of free time. I'm just curious after a conversation with a fellow (he
owns a IP 35) who only sails 3 weeks out of the whole summer. He pays a lot for
a boat he hardly uses, but it's worth it to him. Even if you own a low cost
boat, did you ever calculate the cost vs. time actually spent aboard?

They are only sailed in order to wear things out so you can replace them!
Three times a week? Shame on you!

Is that how far apart your destinations are, or how many miles over
ground, or miles thru the water?

Since I almost always go back to the same place I started, I tend to
think in terms of days rather than miles. The past two years I have not
sailed as much (surprise surprise) but still go out an average once a
week or so. Are there any bonus points for placing in regattas?

Actually, if trips on the tugboat count, then I made about 1800 miles
(nautical miles, destination to destination (or at least there and
back)) last year and already about 900 this year.

Miles through water.

My longest leg so far has been St. Malo, which was about 150 miles.

Placings are definitely worth points.

Last year, I had my worst sailing season ever. A combination of work, and
private commitments conspired to prevent me getting out on the water. I
think that I only did about 500 miles.

The year before, I only missed two weekends between the middle of February
and the end of October.

I'm determined to get more sailing in this year. However, I have two
teenage sons who have discovered that girls are interesting. When I ask
the family if they would like to go for a sail, I just get grunted at!!!

Grunt back. Get a club. Better yet, get one of them to invite a girl

It really depends on the time of year. The annual average wind for LIS
makes it among the windiest places on the entire east coast.

There was almost always wind last season. Sometimes it would die mid-afternoon

Answer 1.

Of course you do. Liveaboards stay permanently tied to the dock.

Answer 2.

I've heard that the average sailboat spends 85% of its time underway with
the engine running.

A couple of weeks ago I spent a weekend aboard a much heavier boat than
Setanta. I was astonished to find that we needed the engine with 20 kts
of wind blowing from behind.

On Setanta, given the same conditions, we would have been stonking along at
about 8 kts under spinaker.

*IF* you spend less that 50% of the time with the engine running, then you
either sail in an area with fantastic breezes, or you may be overestimating
the time that you are running under sail alone.

Again, we run the engine to get clear of the breakwater and that's usually it.
If there is little wind, we sail slow and chat. If there is zero wind we drift.
Unless we need to get somewhere, we don't ruin things by using the engine.

I suppose that it deprnds on the type of sailing that you do. If you
usually race, then you won't use an engine much.

OTOH, if you sail a 30something footer, and you cruise, then you will use
the engine a lot.

It depends.

If we are going to a marina that is only open for a few hours ( -3 HW +2 ),
then we will use the engine if we need to. The alternative would be a
seven hour wait in potentially rough water.

OTOH, if we are out in the Solent (my local area), then I am quite happy to
drift if the tide is carrying us in the right direction.

A typical scenario would be a weekend trip to St Vaast, in France. The
distance is 75 miles. The marina in St Vaast has a lock gate that opens
when the tide is 4.7m above chart datum (usually HW-3). Depending on the
wind, the trip can take between 10, and 19 hours. Our recent trip was taken
on a day when the lock was due to open a 18:00. So we departed at 05:00.
If we had arrived after 19:00, then we would not be able to go out to a
restaurant. (French time is an hour ahead, the French eat early, and there
is a long walk from the marina). You can see that we needed to maintain
about 5.5 kts.
