You need to look at a chart.

Honestly, Donut, I motor about 10%, but then, they do say the Chesapeake Bay

But that's only in the channel. 90% of the bay is too shallow to sail
in.

No channel, just the marina fairway.

Let me guess: you ran aground, didn't you?

A mile from shore. But there was no damage, I just pulled up the
daggerboard, and kept sailing.

*IF* you spend less that 50% of the time with the engine running, then

you
either sail in an area with fantastic breezes, or you may be

overestimating
the time that you are running under sail alone.

Huh?

I suppose that it deprnds on the type of sailing that you do. If you
usually race, then you won't use an engine much.

OTOH, if you sail a 30something footer, and you cruise, then you will use
the engine a lot.

See my answer to Scott.

do you motor when sailing below a certain speed, say 2 kts.?

It depends.

If we are going to a marina that is only open for a few hours ( -3 HW +2 ),
then we will use the engine if we need to. The alternative would be a
seven hour wait in potentially rough water.

OTOH, if we are out in the Solent (my local area), then I am quite happy to
drift if the tide is carrying us in the right direction.

A typical scenario would be a weekend trip to St Vaast, in France. The
distance is 75 miles. The marina in St Vaast has a lock gate that opens
when the tide is 4.7m above chart datum (usually HW-3). Depending on the
wind, the trip can take between 10, and 19 hours. Our recent trip was taken
on a day when the lock was due to open a 18:00. So we departed at 05:00.
If we had arrived after 19:00, then we would not be able to go out to a
restaurant. (French time is an hour ahead, the French eat early, and there
is a long walk from the marina). You can see that we needed to maintain
about 5.5 kts.

Not enough, with mine about twice a month, others' boats, quite a bit.
Holder 20s.. 4 times a week, Yamaha 30... 3-4 times a month.

Now...stop the lying and posturing. Let's all be honest. How much do you

REALLY
sail your own boat. We sail Alien an average of 3 times a week and a bit

more
in the last months. Last summer we only managed time for 5 short trips,

the
longest being 5 days and the others only weekends.
It's not a competition folks. Some of you may be working hard and can't

manage
a lot of free time. I'm just curious after a conversation with a fellow

(he
owns a IP 35) who only sails 3 weeks out of the whole summer. He pays a

lot for
a boat he hardly uses, but it's worth it to him. Even if you own a low

cost
boat, did you ever calculate the cost vs. time actually spent aboard?
