Who will be in the water first?
In the competitive spirit of sailing, I've set
a goal of being the first one sailing this year at the boat club. Unlike most of the club that depend on a one day crane rental for launching, I'm dry sailing, so I am excused from all that crap! grin I would love to be sailing while everyone is sweating there boats around the yard! Ha! Last fall, there were many jealous faces, while I sailed the wonderful late season we had and all the other boats were hauled. This week, I pulled by boat to the club, prepped my mast for stepping, debated whether I should install a windex or not, and decided to go ahead and install it since so many people sailing on my boat can't tell where the wind is coming from. Everything is ready to go. Tomorrow I'll be stepping HOOTs mast, if I can move one big boat mast and round up enough help. I'll have to drop the boat in the water, and then use a gin pole built into the opposite side of the hoist boom, to drop it in, and then haul the boat out again since my registration has not come in yet. There is a fellow in the area who came up with a good gin pole idea, to drop a mast in on the trailer, which is a great idea if you want to haul the boat around to various regattas. I joined another yacht club last December, and have a slip for the big boat, so I will likely be spending most of the spring sanding. My pickup is loaded with West System epoxy, filler, and sandpaper. What exciting things are the rest of you doing this spring? Bart Senior |

Yep, that pintle does sometimes loosen. Did you drop the rudder out and renew the bush? Heh heh, the rudder kinda falls out when the pintle is removed. There doesn't seem to be much meat for the bolts to grip in the skeg so it's no wonder they loosen. I don't know about the bushing, I got snagged to hold the rudder and pintle in place while someone put the new bolts in. Seahag |

the boat I sailed on a pond in Ottawa on 2nd April this year is a home
built (aka "hand crafted") one-sheeter of my own design called a Loonie. There are photos on my website under Boats. A one sheeter is a boat made out of one sheet of plywood. There are half a dozen different one-sheeter designs that I'm aware of. Anybody is welcome to use the Loonie design for free. Usually I'm not able to sail in Ottawa until mid-April. I don't read this newsgroup but I do read rec.boats.building daily and regconize some of the names in this newsgroup from there. tomorrow I hope to enter the other one-sheeter I designed, also on my website, the Delta, in a local canoe race. the ice has been off that river (Jock River, Ottawa) for one week. my goal is not to win, only to survive. -- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ William R Watt National Capital FreeNet Ottawa's free community network homepage: www.ncf.ca/~ag384/top.htm warning: non-freenet email must have "notspam" in subject or it's returned |

Looks like the efforts of the federal government have finally paid off. It's clean enough where I don't feel uncomfortable letting the kids swim in it, though I wouldn't recommend eating fish out of ANY of the Great Lakes. http://community.webshots.com/photo/...82224353xopmod Funny, this picture made me think of this little factoid. Visiting one of the few legitimate tourist attractions at PIB, "Perry's Cave", the guide mentioned that Commodore Perry's men filled their water barrels from the springs in the cave, it seems that even then, long before the industrial age, the water in Lake Erie wasn't fit for human consumption, probably had something to with naturally occurring organisms in the water. We spent a great deal of time at Point Pelee and perch fishing off the pier at Leamington. Beaches were littered with dead sheephead, but we'd pick our way through to swim. Used to go to Holiday Park down by Monroe, too, before they put in the nuke and killed all the fishies there. I could have been in yesterday, but couldn't
find any crew! It takes three people to push the trailer to the hoist. Towing it over wasn't an option because there are rows of masts in the way and it's a very tight fit followed by a ramp. The weather was perfect 15-20 knots and 60 degree. I had everything rigged and ready, registration current, sails, lifejackets, and safety gear loaded --but no crew. I wish I was back in San Francisco --I never had trouble finding crew there. The water is very cold 42 degrees. I wonder how long an average person would last in in the water. 30 to 40 minutes? I got some sanding and fairing done on the big boat in the morning--good weather for that too. The wind blew the dust away nicely.
