The phrase "the stupid race" clearly was intended to denote that set of
people who, regardless of skin color or other characteristics, share a
single common trait--stupidity. Example: "We frequently put people in
arbitrary categories based on some perceived similarities: the black

the white race, the oriental race the stupid race, etc." Step back for a
moment from your preconceptions, prejudices and predilections and see if
that doesn't make sense in context.
