The boat you're thinking of had a transom with steps. Like this:

The XL had the flip down transom like the 34+, but had the tall rig of the R,
running backstays and so on along with a more plush interior than the original
plus model.
The 34's are often refered to as the 34/36+ series. In the end there was only
the 36XL.

I was getting confused with this 34/36 stuff and a 35'6" boat
That rating looks optimistic.


I think it is, especially on the LIS, where I've been told by two racing owners
that they work hard for that rating. But the XL is a pretty fast boat
considering how cruisable it is.
