Default Hey, Booby, this one's for you.

It is truly obscene that the execution of an injured soldier is used to
promote commercial products. I am totally disgusted.

What happened to the geneva convention? Let me remind all of you:

"Article 12. Members of the armed forces and other persons mentioned in
the following Article, who are wounded or sick, shall be respected and
protected in all circumstances.

They shall be treated humanely and cared for by the Party to the
conflict in whose power they may be, without any adverse distinction
founded on sex, race, nationality, religion, political opinions, or any
other similar criteria. Any attempts upon their lives, or violence to
their persons, shall be strictly prohibited; in particular, they shall
not be murdered or exterminated, subjected to torture or to biological
experiments; they shall not willfully be left without medical assistance
and care, nor shall conditions exposing them to contagion or infection
be created."

Remember a wounded man may not be able to put up his arms and surrender
-especially when he doesn't know where the enemy are!

MC, what was the pilot suppose to do with no ground support, let the
guy go so he could kill another day?

If I was in a apache helo and saw guys carrying rocket powered
gernades
I'd "Smoke them" to. I'd have ZERO tolerance.

I did not hear you say you were totally disgusted when the American
helo with the big red cross on the side was shot down last week. Shot
down with the exact type weapon the guys in the footage placed in the
field.

Must be something in the geneva convention about shooting down flying
ambulances right?

OTOH, it was nice of them to put that guy out of his
misery (IMHO). From the looks of it, he was in bad shape and not anywhere near
likely to get good medical care.

You may be right there, he may just have had his eardrums ruptured, but at
the very least he'd probably soon get cancer and die from ingesting all the
depleted uranium dust that was flying about.

Cheers

Marty depleted uranium is saved for bigger things than trucks.
Mostly found on tanks. Typical DU round has to cost a couple of grand.

If your gonna spend that kind of money on a few cut throte murders
running in fields you might as well vaporize the whole bunch with a
hellfire missle.

If you do not want to be killed in a field by someone you can not
see, you should not be running around with weapons used to kill the
guy who just killed you. You follow me?

How do you think the average man in the back of a helo hit by a RPG
feels when he's spinning to the ground about to die?

And the rat that shot the RPG runs down his rat hole to strike
another day.

You may well be correct about the cost of the round, however the average soldier
doesn't usually pause to consider the cost of the ordnance, and if he did he
probably wouldn't care. Armed forces have never had a great image of being misers
with the taxpayers money.

Further, could you tell me how you would select a different round for the 30 mm chain
gun on an Apache, you shoot what you were armed with.

Probably moot anyway if Doug is correct and DU has been withdrawn.

I don't know why they didn't do just that, I have an uneasy feeling that
they were having fun, like at a video arcade.

How do you know for sure that was a weapon? Maybe they were just farmers
going to install some new drainage tile in the ditch?

Just my humble opinon.... I
wonder if the US has really stopped using depleted uranium, or if they've found
something almost as good?

Just about any really dense metal will do for this type of technology, I've seen rounds
made with hardened copper that work quite well. The big problem is finding something that
is really dense that has sufficient tensile strength to withstand the acceleration of being
fired from the weapon and at the same time is not expensive. DU filled these requirements
nicely, it's a waste product and thus cheap, as an added boon this was a great way of disposing
of several thousands of tons of unwanted radioactive waste. I believe I read that making
this type of kinetic round with copper is actually more expensive than DU.
