MC asked: what would you do?

I would have said something like "Excuse me, but it is illegal to pump
your sewage here. If you don't stop immediately, I will repoirt you to
the nearest authoity" Then I would plyg the holes made in my boat and
go report the a-hole.

I'll essentially ditto Katy. Tell him to stop. Stay and watch. If he
does, ok. If not, report him.

If it was sewage, you could smell it from five docks away, dumbass.

This weekend as I transporting gear to the car from the usual w/e away

I
noticed a powerboat running a small pump discharging what seemed to be
sewage in the marina. I made a loud cough but said nothing else. As I
walked along the pier I became annoyed with myself for not doing
anything else. It is prohibited to discharge untreated sewage within

500
m of shore -so what would you do?

You sure it was sewage? It might have been bilgewater, or something
out of his cooler. Did you smell it?

Here MC we have pumpout carts. That way If you do not want to pull
around to the pumpoff station you can wheel a cart around and pump out
on it than dump the cart at the pumpout. If you have the same perhaps
you should of brought him a cart. Or directed him to the pumpout
station. If he did not take a hint go back late at night and take a
big dump in his wheelhouse.

Now that's an intersting idea but the security cams might be a problem...

Donal asked: Is there a good reason why the discharge of raw sewage is
prohibited?

Good gravy, Doanl...that's disgusting. Kids swim in our marina. We swim
off our mooring. We fish off our boat and the kids at the Yacht Club fish
off the docks. You want to go slogging around in someone else's fresh
excrement be my guest, but keep it over in GB.

Ah! Nobody swims in our marina. Also, I never use the boat's head in
any marina either, apart from occasional liquid discharge in one of the
large French marinas, where the shoreside facilities are locked after 23:00
..

My question was genuine. Swimmers are a good reason to ban any discharge.

It is also possible that I see things a bit differently because we have a
good tidal range here. Most of the marinas that I visit have a complete
change of water twice a day.

I'm guessing here, but I'd say that 80% of the water gets replaced in
Portsmouth Harbour on a spring tide. Many of the French harbours dry
completely!

Certainly not. There were gallons being pumped... Since it was a glass
boat the bilgewater should be clean (unlike a rust bucket's bilge :-P)

Bing!!

We don't have many holding tanks here. It's totally illegal to empty a
holding tank within 2(??) miles of the shore.

I suspect that I would cough loudly. After that it would depend on the
appearance of the individual. If he looked like he could kick the crap out
of me, then I would smile politely and say "Nice boat!". If he looked like
a weasel, then I would politely ask if he was aware that pumping out a
holding tank carried a large fine.

Of course, hindsight is a great thing. In reality, most of us would walk on
because we need time to sift the information.

I don't follow - are you saying its illegal to dump a holding tank, but it is
legal to direct discharge?
