Default Ol' Thom, Hey!

Were you aware of the still under Ten-Ten dock? It was run by submariners
for a good part of the war (after they started putting in torpedo juice).
Tended by a ship's crew, an incoming sub would take over for one outbound.

I had forgotten about it!!! Yeah, I was aware of it but they ran me off.
I was too young, I guess. It did get a fair amount of foot traffic
between the moored boats and the torpedo shed.

Gad, was I ever really to young for anything. That "Pink Lady" would
blow the hair right off your Skull.

Default Ol' Thom, Hey!

Once the Navy realized how much of it was evaporating, they turned it into
"Pink Lady." They added croton oil (a laxative), and peppers, to the grain
alcohol to discourage sailors from drinking it. After that, Sailors had
to strain it through loaves of bread (and it still came out pink and stll
gave one the S%#*$). Two sailors off the Halibut set up a still to
re-destill (is that a word?) the grain alcohol to remove the "impurities."
After that the "gilly" supplied the Pearl Harbor boats.

.. with an ingrediant that had to be filtered out through loaves of bread.
