Hmmm think of it this way.
Your car is inspected to make sure it's safe and that you are capable
of driving it
this has cut road deaths and trauma.

In today's Politically Correct climate it has become possible to commit the
perfect murder.

All you have to do, is befreind your victim, and go for a walk with him/her
near a pub. Wait until you see a driver leave the pub looking a bit
"tiddly". As his car approaches you, you just have to push your victim into
his path. When the police arrive, they will breathanalyse the driver and -
Voila! .. they will cease their investigations. .... Case closed! The
drunk driver will get 20 years.

That is the real beauty of politically correct legistlation - you don't need
to look at the cause of a crime any more to keep your crime statistics
looking good.

Young muggers would be honest citizens if old aged pensioners didn't provoke
them by carrying their handbags in public!

Actually in Tasmania cars aren't inspected annually and I don't think
the accident rate is much/any higher than NSW. Registration/insurance
is also *half* of NSW costs for the same vehicle. All my vehicles are
registered here. Handy having addresses in 2 different states.

Besides you overlook the fact that anyone can drive anything they want
without licence or inspection as long as they do it on private
property. All my kids can drive the tractors, bikes etc up the farm.

this has cut road deaths and trauma.
Your ship is inspected to ensure its safe and that the captain and
crew are competant
this has vastly reduced shipping accidents and losses of life.
Aircraft are inspected and the pilot licenced to fly it
this has ensured that loss of life iskept down.
Powerboat drivers are licenced ..... it's debateable whether thai has
achieved anything....

OK.....I'll back out now....cap in hand....

Question of potential damage capability IMO. Cars on public roads -
shared restricted space and possibility of injury to other
people/property. Big ships & planes ditto. Even a small plane makes a
mess if it falls out of the sky and you're underneath it.

Sailboats - where's the percieved benefit to other people? Seems to me
the object is to license to protect people from *themselves* and
secondarily to reduce the expense of rescues. As I've said, I don't
have a problem with simply not rescuing people who commit acts of gross
negligence/stupidity and the best way of doing that is to not know that
they need rescuing. Some hikers in Tasmania have triggered EPIRB's
simply because they were uncomfortable not because they were in a
life-threatening situation. Instead of licensing people we should
restrict rescue signalling devices or impose heavy penalties for
trivial use.

Soon???????? It's here already.

Coming your way soon!

Tasmania will be last. This is the least populated and most backward
state in Australia and that's just how I like it. I can sit in my
lounge room and shoot rabbits out the window if I want to, without my
neighbours saying a word. Just as long as I'm respectful of their
property boundaries and there are no stray bullets. I can buy/build a
sailboat and sail it anywhere I want without needing any paperwork at
all. I can put in a mooring for a boat and in a year or 2, maybe more,
they might find out and ask me to register it & pay a modest fee.

I love it here.

What the hell are we leaving to our children????

An empty wine cellar and a vacant mooring if I get my choice.....

We're a tad more refined, we generally step out on the deck, burnt cordite
lingers and my wife doesn't like the smell.

The muzzle blast can be a problem, too. Even a 22RF is noisy in a
confined space.

Don't have any rabbits in our neighborhood. The neighbors ate them all, right
after they finished off the pigeons.

What's a 22RF? Here we have 22LR (for "long rifle") and 22S (shorts) and 22B
(not sure these are made any more) and 22BB. The BBs are used for popping
balloons in amusement park galleries, hard to find on store shelves but lots of
fun. Perfect for shooting cats or squirrels or rabbits at ranges up to about 30
yards. Better than a compressed air pellet gun and about the same amount of
noise & muzzle blast.
