Interesting you should say that. The Vulcan salute used by Spock is the hand
gesture used by the Orthodox Kohanim during the benediction blessing of the
service. The Kohanim are the male descendents of Aaron and are the "priestly
class" amongst Jews. To this day, Jews that are Kohanim (Cohens) have a special
place in the service, and DNA tests show that line has been rather faithfully
remembered.

Leonard Nimoy was a Kohanim, and grew up in the Orthodox community of the "West
End" of Boston. "Live long and prosper" is a shortened form of the benediction.
