Default Best Catalina design?

Who even knows who designs the Catalinas other
than some dufuss at Morgan Yacht?

Spoken by the man that worked the Irwin assembly line....

Poor old Charlie never designed anything of note.

A few of his older designs had a virtue or two but,
overall, Charlie Morgan isn't listed among the respected
naval architects.

So you are saying Morgan didn't create good designs?

There is no best Catalina design. In order to have
a best designer one must have a vessel designed
by a reputable naval architect such as Wm. Tripp,
Jim Jackett, Halsey Herschoff, etc.

The Catilina 22. They sold nearly 10,000 I think, one of the best entry
level sailboats of all time.

The Capri 37. Not very roomy for it's length but
they're not expensive and they sail great. Very
good looking boat too IMHO.

I wouldn't disagree that the Catalina 22 is one of
the great designs, if allowances are made for era.
In it's day it was the best trailerable cruiser,
but now I think there are dozens of better boats.

If your criteria are cruisability and cost, then
the Catalina 30 should be considered. Not to take
around Cape Horn, of course.

I like the Catalina 30 too. I was very
impressed with the amount of space it had.
It is a nice little cruiser.

I've seen the Catalina 36 from the outside
and I love the way it looks, but I never
sailed one. They tend to be expensive.

I've sailed the Capri 22 and loved it, but
it was way over canvased for SF bay. I
recommended they cut two feet off the boom.
Later someone had the sense to put cut
used Rhodes 18 mains and that helped.

Tell us more about the Capri 37. If it is
like the Capri 22 I bet I'd love it.

What do they sell for?

The 36 does everything well. Good sailing boat with reasonable speed, lots of
room and pleasing to look at. The worst thing you can say about it (or most
Catalinas) is that it's so successful that there's too many of them.

A very good friend owned a 30. He loved it. It sailed
quite nicely. I've sailed dozens of time on a 36 in the
bay. Works great single reefed and 100% jib.

Doug, That was worth 5 pts.

I researched the boat. It rates between
72 and 75. Those are fabulous numbers,
and it is a fabulous looking boat. Thanks
for bringing it into the discussion.
