Lee Boyd Malvo was 15 when he and John Muhammad shot up
Washington D.C. and he's being tried as an adult. Nathaniel Brazill, 14 was sentenced as an adult for the killing of teacher Barry Grunow and given 25 years. How about this? In North Carolina, kids ages 16 and older are always tried as adults, but can't vote, serve on juries, watch R-rated movies, leave home without permission, or sign contracts. How about this? In 10 states, including Michigan, prosecutors now have the authority to move a juvenile case into criminal court. Most states require that the child be at least 14, but in Michigan and Nebraska there is no minimum age. In 36 states and the District of Columbia, the state legislatures have passed laws to exclude all 17-year olds and in some cases all 16-year-olds from the juvenile courts. Three of these states--Indiana, Vermont and South Dakota--allow 10-year-olds to be prosecuted as adults. In other states the legislatures have passed "three strikes and you're an adult" statutes, automatically sending juveniles with records to the adult criminal justice system. http://www.wsws.org/news/1998/may1998/kids-m16.shtml Why are some boys considered adults and others of the same age poor, little boy victims? If you can be sentenced to life in prison because you're old enough to stand trial for murder and other crimes why is it at the same age you cannot be expected to know if you want to engage in consensual sex? Can you say hypocrisy and double standard inspired by religious creed? S.Simon |
