Anyone use these? Looking for a way to spend some west marine gift
certificates...and I have everything else I need! Except for Nightvision...but

I just lick my finger and hold it up and can come within 1/2 a knot of
the wind speed.

Get a MOB pole, Ive not seen one in your photos,you can lash it to the
gawd awfull ugly radar PVC pole. If someone falls over near LIS you
will freeze to death fast if you do not get them out of the water.
Just my 2 cents.

PS- Go with Flir for your nightvision system, Raytheon makes a great
one and it under 12K.

Had a play with one during the dinghy course last year. It had modes to show
current speed, highest speed and maybe some sort of running average. I had
my reservations about the design - the fan struck me as something that could
get clogged up with, say, pocket fluff. I felt that the buttons were rather
small - fine when standing on the pier, but maybe too fiddly when cold and
wet. I don't remember if it had a light.

My impression was that it was a neat little gadget, and fairly desirable on

How about a good quality sailing knife? Small hand-bearing compass? If you
have everything else, then you might as well go for it, but have a look at
the various designs and try to assess their practicality in a wide range of
conditions.

I've been looking at the $12 ones. Just a tube with a ball in it and
a wind speed scale printed on the outside.
The higher the wind speed the higher the ball goes up the tube. Not
much to go wrong and it doesn't need batteries.
I'll bet none of your sailing friends have one of those. )

boat. As for knives...I have several, including one made with a custom whale
bone handle...made for me as a present from antique bone.

I had one made from modern bone....

BTW..... whale bone is very soft. Almost brittle, porous and won't stand up
to use.

I have one of those little Plastimo Iris 50 ones - very pocketable, and has
a neck cord. You hod it against your face and look through a little

I notice that the more expensive Silva Windwatch also has a barometer in it,
complete with a 16 hour memory which displays the readings as some sort of
graph or histogram - that could be interesting if one is into meteorology
while cruising. Have a look at...

Wally.... please! What the heck would Bob do with a marlin spike or a
shackle key?

That item would get less use than his radar or chromed anchor!
