Why don't you just use a regular sailing knife. I can open
mine with one hand and it has everything. "Bobsprit" wrote in message ... BTW..... whale bone is very soft. Almost brittle, porous and won't stand up to use. It's decorative. I use a Jag switchblade aboard the boat. I like the switchblades which open quick and one handed. Wish someone would make one with the spike! RB |

whale engraved on both sides and rubbed with burnt umber. Looks every bit as good and will out last your, if it hasn't already. Came west with me in 1969. Was my father's. Has a single knife blade, A marlin spike and a coupling wrench So there! OT |

How about a good quality sailing knife? Small hand-bearing compass? I've got a great bearing compass, plus a cheap davis model that was NIB on the boat. I have one of those little Plastimo Iris 50 ones - very pocketable, and has a neck cord. You hod it against your face and look through a little magnifying window - very clear and stable. As for knives...I have several, including one made with a custom whale bone handle...made for me as a present from antique bone. I was meaning the type that has a shackle key and spike as well as the blade. I notice that the more expensive Silva Windwatch also has a barometer in it, complete with a 16 hour memory which displays the readings as some sort of graph or histogram - that could be interesting if one is into meteorology while cruising. Have a look at... http://www.adventureshop.co.uk/silva/windwatch.htm http://www.adventureshop.co.uk/silva/alba_windwatch.htm -- Wally www.makearatherlonglinkthattakesyounowhere.com Things are always clearer in the cold, post-upload light. |

Oh, I dunno, he could hammer the marlin spike into the side of the boat and loop a bit of wire through the shackle key - then he could hang the display case for the ornamental whalebone one on it... -- Wally www.makearatherlonglinkthattakesyounowhere.com Things are always clearer in the cold, post-upload light. |
