deck stepped mast are particularly subject to corrosion
and failure.

So what do you do drill a big hole in the deck and pass the wires thru?

Sometimes they cannot be avoided but I don't recall saying any
such thing. And, really, what's the difference between a hole in
the deck through the mast step for the wires and a hole in the
deck beside the mast step for wires except for the fact that
an accessable fitting is preferable to an unaccessable fitting?
