Default Off Topic-Serious Question

What's a low cost starter sailboat for a 5-8 year old that carries a jib? I
have a friend who's looking for something that he can sail with his son. Must
be a smaller boat 12-13 feet.
He was planning on building a boat, but he already has his hands full.

Thanks,

RB

I sail a Dinghy myself...I can't think of a boat that a 5 year can sail by
themselves....that carries a jib...
I know lots of boats that are good beginner boats.....w/ just main
sail....like the Optimist and Byte....Both of these boats are popular enough
that you can join other kids for weekend races.....

Is the kid a boy or a girl?

As in Nova Scotia...Bytes are more popular with girls and Lazers with the
boys.....

I myself want to get my daughter Oceana to get into sailing very early...and
have a optimist in mind....Only I can't convince my wife that 2 years old is
a great age to start

I agree. He's too young to sail by himself and I think I just talked him into
waiting a bit longer before buying a small boat for his son. I suggested a
Windglider with the sail package and junior sail as a "sailing toy" if he
wanted to experiment.

In your area, call the Boy Scout sailing camp on Milton Point in Rye
or the Horsehoe Harbor or LYC in Larchmont or the Huguenot YC in New
Rochelle or Beach Point YC in Mam'k, all of which run sailing programs
for young kids, and ask what boats they use for this purpose.

Though 5-6 yrs old seems to me to be more than a little young, at
least for sailing alone, on any summer day one will see 7-8 yr olds
(and, of course, older kids) sailing alone or with another in +/- 8'
boats, many with (of course: small) jibs in those areas of the L.I.
Sound.

Don't give any ideas to Binary Jane!

Thanks for the info.

I second that about a Byte. They're snappy and small enough.

I suppose for you a serious boating question is "Off Topic"
