Good news - sounds like it eased up very quickly after making landfall.

Whew! Donal makes another rocket scientist quality weather review!

MLW = Mean Low Water. Have you never seen a chart?

Lost power at 0400, came back on 1115. (made coffee on a Sterno can)

Lots
of branches, but no trees down. Didn't get much rain. Wind wasn't as

strong
as predicted. Sun is out now. Looks like we dodged her. Now waiting to
hear how my boat is doing. Water is 8' above MLW!

Scotty,

It is that Surge that has me worred, on here in the NW.

I remember those Surges when I lived back East. Those shallow bbodies of
water would lift boats above those pilings that they were moored to and
as the water went out, the boat would be impailed by the pilings as they
settled. Hope this isn't the case with our group.

Yeah, I can see that. How close to the end of your slip is
the stern? Seems like unless it's at or near the end, the
chance of another boat coming in is pretty small, and
I'm wondering if a fender would really stop anything of
any substance.

Your boat sticks out of the slip?

No, but my boat is IN the slip, wide enough for a loose boat to bounce in.

A
fender off the stern is a good idea.

Are you stern in or
are you afraid of other boats hitting you in the slip?

Protect the stern from other boats. When I read comments from Mooron,

I
have
zero confidence in the boating skills of others.

Chances are small, but it costs nothing to hang the big ball there.

| For gawds sake Bob... I've sailed 40 miles from Mahone Bay to Prospect in
| worse conditions than that!

| You left a safe harbor to bring your vessel into 40-50 knot winds?
| You are NOT a responsible sailor.

Good Lord Man!... we left not only a safe harbour... but did it with a crew
of 5 drinking beer and later Lamb's Navy overproof rum and coffee to cut the
chill as Overproof pressed hard and screamed along under a triple reefed
main and my 110 jib reefed to 90. Not one single boat did we see out there.
At no time did anyone aboard get wet from spray or wave and by the Gods...
the breakers on Peggy's Cove were so high they prevented access to the
lighthouse... 120 meters from the sea.

You would have crapped your drawers if you saw how well we handled the 20
foot breaking rollers at Prospect Head

I've seen worse. During one long race, we went through two storms,
back to back. We were double reefed, and full jib. The race was
right into the teeth of the wind. I napped on the rail for half the
race, and we finished in third place.

Do you really think a fender is going to prevent damage
from a boat being trashed about by a storm?

A big round fender, like the one I'm using, saved my friends J30 when an
Ericson 39 flush deck dragged her mooring and ended up broadside for a windy
night. He still had damage, but far less than if there was no fender out. He'd
forgotten to pull it in that day. If two had been out, there would have been no
damage at all.
Yup, fenders are a good thing.
