First of all, rust starts where the paint is scratched or the like. The crew
on the Golden gate bridge paint it to stop rust, again it rusts where the paint is comprimised. Steel hulled ships, all I can say is I have never seen a GPR ship of any real size.If you use CORTEN steel it will oxidize similar to a guns bluing and not rust. Also to weld ripped or punctured steel you need only hammers, dolly-bars and rod to repair steel, it does not shatter the way GRP does. Close the gap and weld and you are done(other than paint and ect). The only non maintinance advantage GRP has on steel is cost, that is why my boat is GRP. All materials can be carried aboard and they aren't very heavy.No expensive and heavy welder or access to 220 volt electricity is ever needed. It can all be done on a remote sandbar somewhere. Try that with steel boat and see how long it takes to weld up a hole in the hull. Plus I can get steel anywhere in the world. Why not carry a couple sheets of steel along like I do with glass and resin? Then some rods and a welder along with a big generator to run it? Welding Aluminium requires a bit more skill and exclusive equipment. In
