Oh... apologies... I didn't realize this was one of your running gags. Glad
I didn't spoil it for you....

Makes sense now as to why you were reluctant to discuss the details.

I really should know better than to approach you with any topic regarding
sailing. Excuse me while I remove the hook and make a note in my log.

His claims and posting time don't add up.... he posted at 1430hrs. Anyone
preparing for an overnight trip with a 1500hr depature time would be aboard
and securing stations by now.

I wouldn't rely on the times and proposed schedule to be anything but an
elaborate deception. It's just Bob being Bob..... deal with it.

Hey Nutsy,

Your staying over in Cold Spring Harbor,
Many ,many years ago there was a very productive clam bank, just North
of the tanks. I suppose it has been dug out but it did provide many
Little Necks on the half shell for me when I was a boy.

Those where the days when my sailing vessel was a 12 ft canoe with a
Lateen rig

I took the 1500hr to be when he leaves his house. I don't know how far he is
from the boat, but I think he claimed that it was already provisioned. So,
maybe departing from the slip at 1600-1700?

Quite. The tour boat hypothesis (or competent crew delivery of Alien) is
starting to look ever more likely.

Agreed!

We can be fairly certain that Bob isn't going to sail 50 miles from his
marina. However, he seems very confident that he will contact BB on the
VHF.

I wonder if he knows somebody who works for the CG?? That could explain his
confidence in the power of the radio!!

I don't believe that Alien is available for charter. Charter boats are
either fairly new, or fairly special! A 1980 C&C 32 is neither. It *is*
possible that it is being used for sailing courses, but Bob wouldn't be
aboard for a course that involved a 50 mile trip from his marina.

I am looking forward to the wriggling that will follow Monday's explanation!

I can't see any humiliation or beating Bob..... I've completed a trip

from
Halifax to Mahone Bay in one day.... that's aprox. 80 nautical miles.
Departure at 0600hrs with a 15 kt breeze [Norwester] and picked up a

mooring
at Mahone Bay at 2250hrs. Trip log read 102 nautical miles. Engine hour

log
confirmed 21 minutes run time.[ negotiating departure from the Northwest

Arm
in flat calm to Halifax Harbour including engine warm up time.]

S'funny .... how the memory plays tricks on you!

Your post reminded me of a 92 mile trip from Portsmouth to LeHavre. Before
typing this answer, I thought that I would check the log book(so that I
could be 100% certain of my facts).

It is odd how our memory can be defective!

Memory: There was a two hour period where we averaged over 8 kts!
Log: There was a two hour period where we averaged 7.4 kts
(through the water)

Memory: The engine was on for the first 15 minutes, and also for the last
hour.
Log: The engine went off after 15 minutes, but it came on again for
the last 7.5 hours!!!!!

We set off at 07:00 hrs and had 23 kts wind on the beam for a few hours. It
started at 18 kts, and built up to 28 kts, and then it started to die. By
13:30 the log shows that the wind had dropped to 8 kts. The 16:30 entry
records "3-5 kts variable".

Recently, somebody said that yachts spemd 85% of their time under engine.
Maybe it's true.
