Boat was loaded down with 10 people yesterday, but wind was awesome!!!!
Re-installed the boom vang just in time as we ran downwind at 9 knots! What a
ride!!! Luckily, dispite some heavy air and waves, no waves crashed down on
anyone!
Coming out of Manhasset Bay we saw a J24 get knocked down. Thankfully he has
his lockers locked!

With a strong wind blowing against the current, it is possible to have 6'
waves even in the upper Chesapeake, especially in the vicinity of Pooles

Are you implying that you are just one of Scotty's sock puppets?

i can confirm that sailing conditions were awsome July 31st.
Lower Bay, NYC winds S/E at 20+ kn steady. Stupidly single handing an
unreefed Freedom 36. Got beat to hell, but lord it was geat.

Yup...calmed down a bit after 6, then picked up again for a while. My boat was
so bloody crowded, but we had lots of rail meat. I sailed into Manhasset bay to
get a bitof protection so we could safely cut a watermelon.

No, Donal, I said what I said. My top speeds that day were 7.5 kn
dead down wind, in the lee of Sandy Hook, wing and wing in a calm sea
in 18kn apparent.
8.2 kn close reaching in 4 to 6' beam seas, 26 kn apparent. Way
over canvassed. Could probably have done the same reefed w/o the
rudder drag.

at least 7!
Miserable and rainy here today with plenty of thunder. We're heading out anyway

8.2 kn close reaching in 4 to 6' beam seas, 26 kn apparent.

We actually had higher wind funneling out of Manhasset bay's entrance. Calmed
down after we sailed in a bit.
Knotmeter read 8.5 a few times on a reach. The GPS was at 9 once, around 7.5
the rest of the time. Great ride, but too many people on board. By the time we
left the bay it had dropped off and we were just a bit under hull speed. Great
little daysail!

Ahhhhh! Now it's the GPS that read 9. Honestly, I could get 13 knots
through the Alderny Race if the boat was only doing 4 kts.

That must be the new math. Knotmeter says 8.5 and GPS says 9 = 4 knots!

Manhasset is the western end of the sound. and the current does run
1.5kn 1-3hrs opposed to the race until you get to Eatons Neck/Oyster
Bay,when it begins to coincide.

I haven't sailed the area for years, but I don't recall anywhere on the
eastern end of the Sound with serious current.

Bobsprit August 2nd 03 01:05 AM

Yes. I meant to say the western end. The eastern end is a whole 'nother
matter when it comes to current.

I was well into the bay with nominal current when I recorded max. speed. In any
case, 9 on the knotmeter and 8.5 on the GPS a few times.
Do the math anyway it entertains you. We were moving nicely, passing everyone
but a huge Beneteau Oceanis 46 or 49.
