Why shouldn't they be able to have a bible study class as long as it

They made us study Beowulf.

At least everyone knows Beowulf is a mythic poem. Too many accept the
bible as "real."

My English teacher seemed to think it was real, or at least far more
significant that I thought it was.

On the other hand my Latin teacher thought Gallic Wars was the I
Ching. Analysing it did make Latin more interesting tho so maybe it
was a good teaching tool.

They couldn't get me interested in Beowulf.

Beowulf is a significant bit of English literature, as is the KJ Bible.
Caesar's writings are also significant literature, and a valuable source
of history and customs.
