I've tried similar in the past and reaped the results, usually a mess
that takes three times the effort to clean up than a proper job would
take.
Soldering irons are cheap and small, useful for other jobs, so of
course I have one aboard. That half-hour rewiring job I mentioned
included de-soldering the old plug and soldering the new connections on
as we sailed along. Didn't have to put it aside overnight as I would
have had to do with the wire glue.
